Spin on registry questions...what NOT to buy?
For those of you that have BTDT what do you consider is a waste of money?
for example, my SIL told me not to waste my money on a diaper genie (or any diaper pail). She suggested I just get the disposable bags and empty the pail every day (which we do now anyway.)
Any others?
TIA

This is from my sister who has 4 kids...don't register for too many infant clothes. They grow out of them really fast and everyone brings you clothes once the baby is born. She suggests a couple of packages of onies and a couple of sleepers.

Re: Spin on registry questions...what NOT to buy?
Also don't register for more than 1 package of receiving blankets-people buy them anyways, Same thing with Bibs! I have soo many bibs that I will need, but didn't register for.
Wipe warmer is waste, i agree with your SIL with the diaper genie or anything like that-waste. Don't register for too many bottles, you're little one might need/like a different one.
Do register for different kinds sheet protectors, lots of burp cloths, ultimate crib sheet, and extra sheets for the crib.

Re: Spin on registry questions...what NOT to buy?
I have to disagree with the above posts. My son was 6lbs 15oz and he didn't even fit into newborn clothes. So I had to go out and get more infant clothes for him. In my opinion you never have enough clothes and he is still not in his newborn clothes at 2 weeks old. I am constantly changing him because he spits up a lot. And the he seems to be in between sizes with diapers (preemie-newborn) so he ruins his clothes all the time.
Also I love the receiving blankets. I can't have enough. I use them a lot especially with the AC on.
No one brought me clothes when we got home nor did they buy me blankets.
IMO a waste was the wipes warmer and the bottle warmer. And don't register for bottles yet. I have so many soothie and dr. browns but he is using mother's milkmate bottles right now. So, that was a waste. Also bibs. I have a zillion bibs from people.
I love my diaper dekor. It really keeps the smell in and holds so many diapers. I love it.

Re: Spin on registry questions...what NOT to buy?
Charly this is such a great post, thanks for starting it!! We are going to start registering soon and there are so many things I wonder what we should not put on there or put on there!
-Question, what about the Sleep Sack - what about the sleep sack - what size should I register for?

Re: Spin on registry questions...what NOT to buy?
This is why my friend is coming with me to register. She told me not to regsiter for a aterilizer (the dishwasher is enough), the wipe and food warmer, because they will get used to everything being warm, and when you are on the go or out, you cant have it with you, and also she told me the swaddle blankets were a waste. She said yoy cant use a regular blanket to swaddle them in??
She is offering to come with me next Tues. to finish my registry

That's true about the food and bottles when you're out...never thought of that. As for the swaddle blankets my mom said the same thing!

Re: Spin on registry questions...what NOT to buy?
I would register for small and medium sleepsacks. My son HATED having anything covering his feet and I had to run out and get him size mediums so that he could kick up his feet without having them feel strapped in the size smalls (my first born son was 6lbs. even, my second son was 6lbs. 3 oz. and my daughter was 6lbs. 12oz.)
I agree about the food warmer, bottle warmer and wipe warmer. all def a waste.
and Diane, that's EXCELLENT that your friend is going with you. she is right on the money with what she is suggesting. Good luck!

Re: Spin on registry questions...what NOT to buy?
I did the same kind of thing...I did my registry with what I thought...then I asked my SIL (who has 2) to look at it online...she told me what to add/take off.
This is so stressful...and so far, I'm not finding this registry process fun at all

Re: Spin on registry questions...what NOT to buy?
May I just suggest something? Please DO not get one of the people at the Baby Registry counter to "assist" you in registering. Usually, it's a 16-18 year old kid, who knows NOTHING and is going by the pamphlet that you get with your welcome package. Def get suggestions from someone who has children and can give you tips.

Re: Spin on registry questions...what NOT to buy?
I liked the Swaddle Me's because I could not swaddle her good enough in a regular blanket.
I registered for a small and a medium Halo sleep sac. (the medium is 6-12 months) and she is still using the size medium.
I agree on the wipe warmer and food warmers...waste!
I have a regular diaper pail and empty it daily.
Also you will probably get a ton of baby wash, shampoo and lotions...I have enough to last me til she is 2 (she has hardly any hair so I am not using much shampoo....)

Re: Spin on registry questions...what NOT to buy?
I had my SIL and cousin who bothhave children help me register. best thing I ever did. there are somany things on those list they give out at BRU that are a waste.
Everyone seems to agree - bottle and food warmers, wipe warmers all a waste. i didnt bother withthe diaper genie or another typeof pail like thateither. I am going to use the scented bags and change the pail every day.

Re: Spin on registry questions...what NOT to buy?
I agree if you can have a friend/family member that is already a mom come with you it is the best idea
I agree about all the warmers and the diaper genie thing(I have a separate garbage can outside my back door and throw each diaper out there.)
I also agree about the receiving blankets. I have like 25 from Damien.
I also think that if you are not finding out the sex of the baby, and the baby will be sleeping in a bassinet, to wait till you know the sex to pick out bedding. Then you can get gender specific bedding

Re: Spin on registry questions...what NOT to buy?
i know im repeating many of the things already said, but i am a mommy of 2 so i thought i could help alil. now this is jmo, but i found no use for:
wipe warmer diaper genie bottle steralizer swing ( i know, alot of kids love it, but mine both hated it, and it took up too much room anyway) changing table ( again, never used mine, gave it away, i did all my changing either on my bed or floor)

Re: Spin on registry questions...what NOT to buy?
I just wanted to say that some of the stuff some people might find a waste, others may not. For instance everyone told me not to register for too many receiving blankets or clothes, well I got a bunch of receiving blankets I hated (they were fleece, I wanted cotton), so I had to return them all anyway. My DS was born at 6lbs 7oz, I had to go out and get clothes for him, his 0-3month clothes were all too big and his is just now 9lbs and growing into them at 7 weeks old. People said to get side snap shirts in all sizes, IMO this was a waste, I hate them, they ride up, I used them until his belly button healed and switched to onesies, which I had to go out and buy....now I have side snap shirts in 3-6 months I'll never use. I liked the bottle warmer, It was $17.99 so I don't feel like it was a waste, my DS is now on special powder formula, but before that I used RTF and when he got up to eat I would pop the bottle in and by the time I was done changing him, the bottle was ready. I could go on forever, but I think everything is a personal choice, you'll figure out what you like once the baby is here. I never got a wipe warmer but I do have the diaper champ, it keeps the room from smelling until the end of the night when it can get emptied. Good Luck!!
ETS: I think the bassinett was a waste of money for us, I switched him to the pack n play, I like that much better and so does he.

Re: Spin on registry questions...what NOT to buy?
Just like the above poster said, EVRYTHING is up to you (or the baby)! My 3 year old nephew is now potty trained but pretty much up until that my sister used her wipe warmer and diaper genie (actually she has a different kind but same idea). Yes, when she is out the wipes weren't getting warmed but by sitting in a warm car, they actually kind of are! Both my nephews LIVED in their bouncy seats, only one would use the swing. My girlfriend had to throw the bouncy seat away from her then 1 1/2 year old because he would sit in it until it was flat to the ground! Whe I registered for my layette, the girl (who my mom is friendly with) would only "let" ,e register for 1 set of the side-snap onesies. She said as soon as the bellybutton is healed you will never use it again. They ride up (as previous poster said) and most new moms prefer the kind that snap on the bottom.
