Spinoff - Old Neosporin, among other things

Get this.

My ILs have drugs/creams/etc from 1997 Chat Icon Chat Icon FIL would bring them home from work a little bit at a time, and began hoarding them in his basement.

I am SOOOOO grossed out by this. I once cut myself while cooking at his house, and my only choice for medicine was 4 year old generic LIRR antibiotic ointment, or 7 year old Neosporin.

FIL's argument is that "Years ago, things didn't have expiration dates. We used them til they were gone, and none of us ever keeled over and died from it."

I've tried to explain that we now have better ways of knowing how long ingredients are active, etc. He thinks I'm full of it.

Since his retirement in 2003, he also does the food shopping. When cake mix is on sale, he'll buy 20 boxes and leave them in the basement. I will NOT EAT CAKE that comes from that house, because there's a mighty good chance that its more than 3 years old. I clipped the article from a few months back - you know, the one that said people were dying from fermenting pancake mix, flour, etc....his response was "I aint never bought pancake mix". Chat Icon

Beer, soda, potato chips, you name it. At any given time, he has all 3 of those in the basement....expired over a year.

I can't do anything about it - but OMG!

my grandmother loves salad dressing - I'll go to her house, open her fridge, and find salad dressig (blue cheese no less) that expired YEARS ago. I give her the pleasure of tossing it for her.

I don't understand the concept of buying 20 of something just because its on sale....ESPECIALLY if you only use it 4 times a year!

Alot of the older generation seems to do this...I used to work in a nursing home and these people didn't give a crap if things expired last month or 20 years ago....they didn't throw out a thing

Depression mentality

Re: Spinoff - Old Neosporin, among other things

I use drugs, etc that are expired, especially prescription drugs. they're automatically dated a year from them being filled, but they were on the shelf much longer, if I bought it a month alter, it would be the same pills makred a month later....

But not super duper expired.

Cake mix, other food I will use if it's a couple of months expired.

OMG DH thinks I'm nuts sometimes, I won't even use something if the sell by date is today, even though I know they can sell it until today so it has to stay good for a few more days! I'm a fanatic about that stuff. If I have something in the pantry and I'm not sure when it's from and it has no date I usually don't use it. Maybe I am alittle nuts!Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Spinoff - Old Neosporin, among other things

I missed this thread and my SIL happened to point it out to me. My mother had spices in a cabinet above the stove that she never went into. So one day, while Barbara was there, I decided to take a gander into this abyss. Let me tell you, I found spices in there from the 70s. Barbara and I were rolling, we were laughing so hard about the spices up there. I used to have to threaten her to throw away salad dressings.

And now, because of her, I check dates on EVERYTHING obsessively. Even at Barbara's house, I was about to give my beautiful niece some milk that was a day passed expiration. Barbara and my brother told me to go for it, but I just couldn't. I made my brother do it. Chat Icon

What you're not pointing out is that your mother moved THREE times since the 70's & brought the spices & the old cans of shaving cream with her from the 70s

McCormick's actually had an ad in Good Housekeeping showing what their old labels looked like & said if you have any that look like that they are OLD, so throw them out!

So, your mother is probabaly not the only one!
