Spinoff - Why do some inductions start with Cervadil - and others with Pitocin?
What is the reasoning behind this?

I think Cervadil softens the cervix, Pitocin increases and regulates contractions.

Yup exactly..Cervidil is if you are not effaced. Basically it is the first of a 2 part process for induction. They only give Cervidil then when the cervix is not ready to respond to contractions. It acts to ripen the cervix first ..then once effaced....you can get the Pitocin.

Does the Cervadil always stay in for the 12 hours - or are there cases where it is taken out earlier?

They don't need cervidil when you are already progressed. I was induced at 41 wks and a few days. I was already very effaced and dilated (over 3cm) for wks at that point. I was induced only with a little pitocin.

If they induce using Cervadil, its in for 12 hours- in less of course, like me, you have a horrible reaction and it has to come out right away. Cervadil sometimes makes the babys heart rate erratic.

Not always.
I was induced with my DD. I was admitted to the hospital at 9pm, Cervadil was inserted at 10pm and removed at 7am the next morning.
Pitocin started around 8:15 am and they also broke my water at that time.

Just an FYI, sometimes they have to do two rounds of cervadil as they did with me.

Not ALWAYS 12 hours. Sometimes less. If its more they re-insert a new one.
For me I had 3 rounds. #1 and #2 12 hours. #3 6hrs. i wasnt progressing at all

same except I was induced with a lot of pitocin, my contractions where none existent prior, but they really needed to up my dose to get me to contract, everything else was in place.

Re: Spinoff - Why do some inductions start with Cervadil - and others with Pitocin?
They started me on Cervadil bc i believe i wasnt really effaced
I was 41 weeks 6 days late, not effaced much and maybe 1 cm dilated which i was for like 3 weeks. I had a wonderful induction.
Got there at midnight, Cervadil inserted at 2am, Cervadil came out ON ITS OWN at 4am bc my water broke, right into labor i went. By noon i was 8 cm dilated, finally convinced me to get an epidural bc i was laboring hard since 4am.
Started pushing at 4pm, baby out at 6pm.
They didnt give me pitocin until right before they wanted me to push, to get me over the 9.5 to 10 cm, looking back, next time i would tell them no at that point i didnt need the pitocin, i was fine on my own and im still ****** they did that.

Re: Spinoff - Why do some inductions start with Cervadil - and others with Pitocin?
I was induced with cervadil with DD at 38 weeks. The doc said I would have a nice restful evening and by morning they would start me on pitocin and get the ball rolling - he even told DH to go home and come back in the morning.
Cervadil was inserted around 9-9.30pm - I was 9 cms by 12.30 that same evening!!! I asked for an epi and got one which slowed my gallop down but DD was still born in the early hours of the morning so the moral of this story is you may not need cervadil AND pitocin - your body might react like mine did and the cervadil might be all you need.
Good luck

I was about 2 cm and 50% effaced - just straight pitocin for me too. A good friend was induced with just cervidil - went into labor during the 12 hours and progressed very quickly once the contractions started. she never needed pitocin.
