Spinoff - why is 22 weeks the 6th month?
I am also just about 22 weeks (Saturday) but I figure I am 5.5 months. I am so confused. Should I be saying I am in my 6th month? It confuses me!

I think it is that you have completed your 5.5 months but are in your 6 month. Does that make any sense But technically you aren't 6 months yet.

Re: Spinoff - why is 22 weeks the 6th month?
ITs so confusing right?!
The reason is that the month to month calculation is based on a 40 week gestational period using Lunar months which is a 28 days cycle.
There is often confusion when some try to convert weeks into months and count a month as 4 weeks. February is the only month with just 4 weeks. The average month is 30.4 days, a little over 4 weeks and 2 days long. A normal pregnancy is 40 weeks, or, little longer than nine average months. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Days - 280 days from your LMP (Gestational) or 266 days from conception to birth (Fetal age).
Weeks - 40 weeks from the start of your LMP (Gestational). 38 weeks from conception to birth (Fetal age).
Most doctors count pregnancy weeks from LMP (Gestational), a few others may count from conception to birth (Fetal age); and the week numbers may vary. Example: Week 28 (Gestational) = Week 26 (Fetal age)
Months - Measured as nine months on the calendar -- starting one week after your LMP.
Lunar Months - A lunar month is the time between two successive new moons or full moons. Lunar months approximate the mean length of approximately 29.53059 days (29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes and 3 seconds). 280 days is approximately nine and half lunar months, since a lunar month is approximately 29.53 days long. When people claim that a pregnancy is exactly 10 lunar months, they are making the mistake of calculating a lunar month to be 28 days long.
Trimesters - The word trimester means 'three months'. Three periods of three months each. Months 1, 2 and 3 are the first trimester, months 4, 5 and 6 are the second trimester, and months 7, 8 and 9 are the third trimester.
Most commonly, the first trimester is defined as from LMP through to end week 13. The second trimester is from week 14 through to end week 26. And the third trimester is from week 27 through to labor/delivery, which varies considerably but averages at week 40. 13weeks + 13weeks + 13weeks = 39weeks + 1week = 40weeks

How is this correct then? Wouldn't 22 weeks be the beginning of 6 months??? Otherwise this chart would say Month six was 24 to 28.

I *think* it's because you have not completed your 6th month yet. You are technically 5.5 months pregnant - i.e you have completed 5 months of pregnancy and are halfway into your 6th month. When you hit the end of that month, you have now completed 6 months are therefore now officially 6 months pregnant. Anyday after that you are 6 months and 1 day pregnant, 6 months and 2 days, etc - into your 7th month.
My head hurts...

Really weeks 24-28 are months 6-7. 6 months starting at 24 weeks and 28 weeks starting your 7 month. So weeks 20-24 you are in your 5-6 months. It's really confusing.

Re: Spinoff - why is 22 weeks the 6th month?
I'm 22 weeks today also. I'll take 6 mos, makes it feel that much closer to D-day, and gives me a reason for the big belly. Someone guessed today I was having a boy, but said I was probbaly 7 or 8 mos. I was like, no, try 6 - thought I was lying about that, but I really am 6. Who=hoo!!!

It really depends on how you look at it. Personally, I follow the guidelines that randella posted. 22 weeks would be the beginning of the 6th month.
Some people use the 4 weeks = 1 month and consider 24 weeks to be 6 months. However, 1 month is not exactly 4 weeks. Also, using this formula, pregnancy would be 10 months.

Re: Spinoff - why is 22 weeks the 6th month?
You're IN your sixth month, not six months. I think that's the easiest way to understand it. I'm almost 32 weeks and IN my eighth month but I won't have completed 8 months until I'm 36th weeks.
Ugh...thank god this is almost over!

Not really. 40 weeks is less than 10 months. Assuming you have a 28 day cycle, your EDD is a little over 9 months from the date of your LMP.

Yes, a normal pregnancy lasts 10 months. The whole 9 month thing started long, long ago before calendars. Women knew once they missed their period that they could count on a baby arriving after 9 full moons, so this, over the years was translated into 9 month pregnancies, which is not accurate. A full term pregnancy is 40 weeks, divide that down, and you come up with 10 months.

We can go back and forth on this, but 40 weeks does not equal 10 months. If 4 weeks = 1 month, then there are 13 months in a year, which is obviously not true.
