Spinoff: Best picture

Best picture is just the best of whatever came out that year. I remember back to one year (maybe 1999) when Good Will Hunting, American Beauty, LA Confidential, and The Sixth Sense were up all for the best pic.

I mean these were AMAZING films all up against one another. An amazing year in movies nonetheless.

The past few years I have seen nothing but sh!tty movies, so to pick the Best, from the Worst, must be difficult.

While Crash may never live up to Titanic, I find it weird and interesting that they both hold the same title.

Would love to see maybe a best of the best. The best movie in the past, 5, 10, 20 years? What's your thoughts?

These are things I think about when I get involved with chardonnay.
That's all. Off my soapbox.
Thank you

Best of the best. Hmmm....many people believe "The Godfather" is one of the best films ever made. It's a matter of opinion. There's so much to discuss when you think about cinematography, etc. To me, I mean, the fact that those 2 kids at the time wrote "Good Will Hunting?" Amazing achievement.

Something like best/worst is so subjective. I was actually shocked that Titanic won best pic over LA Confidential which I thought was outstanding.

I do agree that there have been very few GREAT movies in the past few years.

I agree with you Nancy, the past few years have been quite boring at the Oscars...and The Departed...haven't heard about the movie until a few weeks before the Oscars. But I guess thats the beauty of the film industry...different movies are made each year, although we may not like some of them, they are still an artistic creation which qualifies for an award...thus the reason why they win them.

Are you involved with Chardonnay now-At 10:30 AM?

To answer you original question-I've never thought abut it. Just always accepted that it is an annual event so it only matters what other movies came out that year.

I guess, now that I am thinking about it, if a specific movie I loved (take Shawshank Redemption, for example) had come out a year later, maybe it would have won. it definitely deserved to win over a lot of movies that have won since.

Though they don't have award shows, they do have lists every 10 or 25 years, in 1999 they came out with lists of the best movies on the century.

Re: Spinoff: Best picture

they do the 31 days of Oscar on AMC. it's a chance to see the best of the best, both winners and nominees. I love it.

watched Casablanca on Sunday before the big show....it doesn't get much better than that movie.

I agree with all of your points. The dialouge in "Titanic" was so sappy and silly. "LA Confidential" is one of the few cases where I enjoyed the book and the movie.

This is interesting to me, because I thought Crash was a way better movie than Titanic Chat Icon

I think there is a lot that goes into the pick that movie industry people look for that the general public doesn't get. Also, I think there is a lot of politics involved in the award voting, which may explain why some movies or actors win, when others seemed like a better choice. I am thinking of Denzel Washington's win. He won for work that wasn't his best, IMO, but he had some big names really pushing others to vote for him (Julia Roberts). In the end, I think it's all subjective to a certain degree.

I agree, I think Crash was a LOT better than Titanic.

I think there should be a best of the best award. I was thinking the same thing. I would love to see picks of the best movie, best actor of each decade, etc.

They do do this in some form. I'm not sure who publishes it, but they do have the Top 100 movies of all time list that comes out once in awhile.

I also agree that Crash was way better than Titanic. Maybe Titanic had all the cool special effects and everythng, but in the end it was just a sappy love story based on some facts. Crash was extremely well written and well acted. It is probably the best movie I have seen in a VERY long time!

It's the difference between something that has menaing and hollywood fluff!

It's like going to see The Lion King on Broadway with all of the glamour and spectacle, and going to see maybe an Albee or a Terrence MCNally on Broadway. They're good for completely different reasons.

But sometimes in Broadway and in Hollywood, it seems like spending a certain amount on spectacle guarantees and audience and possibly an award, and that really stinks and makes it hard for the people who are really trying to say something, which is why I'm so glad Little Miss Sunshine won Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor. It's so good to see a smaller film do so well and get so much buzz.
