Spinoff: Debt Question
Are you helping your spouse get out of debt or are they helping you?
Do you only have joint debt from purchases made together or no debt at all?

We have done both at different times in our life together.....I have helped pay off some things of his and he basically paid off my credit cards before the wedding with side jobs he had.

what kind of debt? we have no credit card debt, but we have a mortgage, car payments and student loans.
The money is all ours, so while the new car is "mine" and the student loans are "his", we both pay them.

Happy to say NO debt. Well, credit card debt and bills anyway. We do have a mortgage together and a boat loan together but that's different IMO.

We have a mortgage, and I have a student loan which we're paying off. I had a small amount of CC debt when we were first married that I paid off on my own.

well when DH and I first met yes. I helped him pay for all his annoying Credit Card bills. But now we are pretty much living debt free!

My DH has been great about this. In his mind once we were married it was our debt. I came to the marriage with 53K of student loan debt and about $25K left on my car and all he had was his student loan of $20K.
He paid off my car immediately and we busted our buts this year to pay off my student loan and we did it!!
Next is onto his student loan. So while we both worked to pay things off DH definitely put in more than I did to pay things down but has never made me feel guilty or like I "owe" him.
I really married a great man.

I can't answer by the poll because we both have some debt to a degree- nothing really major, but since we have really combined everything, I see it as more we are both helping one another to pay off ecahother's debt- if that makes any sense- and this is also a combination of individual and together debt.
I can't wait to be debt free- all of you that can say they are are very lucky and fortunate!

As of right now..we are finishing up paying off some of DH credit card bills...nothing too large...
and when thats all paid off...we will then begin to pay off my student loans...
I hate money!

DH paid off all my debt besides the student loans I have that my dad is paying off.
Right now, the only debt WE have is our house and one car, and the tv.

When we got married, I had credit card debt and he had student loans. Almost all of my debt is paid off and his loans are getting there too.

The only debt we have is our car payments. Neither of us have any CC debt, either past or present. All school loans are paid off. Right now we are renting so no mortgage. We pay all our bills as they come in so no late payments.

We are completely debt free, but we don't own a house yet. Our hope is when that happens, the mortgage will be our only debt

I am helping my spouse out of debt. The majority of his debt is for school and a car.
I was fortunate that early on, I had help from my parents. That REALLY made a difference in my life. DH lost his father when he was 21, so he didn't have much help.
My MIL is generous and that helps A LOT.
eta: we have a joint savings account that I am a total PSYCHO about. ALL gift money gets deposited into the account. The ONLY items that warrant a 'deduction' from the savings account are: a new house or an unexpected emergency.
