Spinoff: How long did it take you to furnish your house and get it to the way you always dreamed of?

And did you live there during the process, or live in your old place?

My house is not 100% complete, but for the most part the rooms we are using now are. I would say it took a good 6-months to a year to get it to the way we wanted it. My suggestion is furnish the rooms you are going to utilize first and then the rest down the line. Take your time and don't impulse buy, decorating a house is defiantly one of the joys of owning a home.

To answer your other question on living there, we did. We had an Apt before the house and used our bedroom set we had for a few months before we found a new one we wanted.

Funny thing, we actually had a party the weekend we moved in, had basically no furniture but could care less because we were so happy.

In the beginning of May we'll be in the house 2 years. Almost everything is done. Most of the stuff i need is accessories. The only furniture we really need right now if for our finished basement.

we've been in our house since July 2007, so getting close to 2 years... and its still not near where i want it to be... its getting there, but not quite. we still have some more remodeling to do, as well as decorating. DH likes to do everything himself, so we go through spurts where we get in the mood to do a lot all at once, and then don't do anything for awhile.
I think it helps when you look at the stuff you HAVE done already, it makes you feel good. Like, so far since we've been in our house...
our bedroom is done
one bathroom was gutted and redone
replaced EVERY appliance
got our bar room finished
guest room is pretty much done (needs another picture hung up)
we turned one room into a "library" with new wood laminate floors and bookshelves
painted the kitchen

for your second question, yes we were living here while we did all of this.

I have owned and lived in my house for 11 years.

It is all furnished...and took about 1.5 years to do so.

But I have also redone entire rooms and renovated this house a million times since we purchased it in 1998.

Let me tell you...you are never "done" with a house. Never. Chat Icon

Re: Spinoff: How long did it take you to furnish your house and get it to the way you always dreamed of?

I try to appreciate the process more than the goal because I don't feel I'll ever be done. Short term was to make the common areas furnished for company which was accomplished in 6 months. The outside landscaping problems were "fixed" in 6 months. We just finished buying all the furniture we wanted last week with the addition of a dresser, two nighstands, a tv console and bookcase.

Next is the patio, patio furniture, electrical work, bathroom work, adding a room, redoing gutters and siding, driveway...

I can't live with the enormity of everything, so we think 6 months to 1 year ahead and enjoy what we have now. Chat Icon

We've been in our house for almost 2 years and are no where near done. I'de say in another 2 years we should be in pretty good shape, but not done.

We're in our house almost 1 year and still have a lot on our list! New carpet in bedrooms, entryway furniture, closet system in master and 2nd bedroom, shelving/cabinetry in garage, master bathroom/vanity area re-do... just to name a few.

But, a lot of big stuff has also been done in the last year like the kitchen renovation, painting every room, installing new flooring, etc.

Re: Spinoff: How long did it take you to furnish your house and get it to the way you always dreamed of?

We own our house almost for two years and it's still not the way I want it. I think it will be a couple more years before that happens. Other things come up with a house that you have to spend your money on instead of getting that new couch you really wanted. Chat Icon But some of the rooms are sort of complete. The DR, our bedroom and bathroom. Otherwise the LR needs new couches....ok I want a new one. Chat Icon And we are in the process of finishing our den. The other two bedrooms will be done I guess when we have kids. Chat Icon Otherwise they will stay the way they are right now....some furniture. Chat Icon Furniture the rooms that make sense for you guys first. Then buy for the other rooms after you are settled in. It's hard in the beginning to furniture the whole house, you never know when something needs to be fixed and you have to spend your money on that instead. Chat Icon

Re: Spinoff: How long did it take you to furnish your house and get it to the way you always dreamed of?

8/9 months of renovations.
Almost whole house was gutted. DH did all the work.

Interior was done. Still needs to do a finished basement and we plan on adding an extra bathroom.

Exterior part has taken us longer: siding, fence, Driveway (getting redone as we speak). and roof.

ETA:Lived at my moms apt and stayed there until it was done.

Re: Spinoff: How long did it take you to furnish your house and get it to the way you always dreamed of?

we've been in the house 9 months. We really only have some of the furniture we need...new couches, coffee table, china closet and sideboard (were hand me downs). We are still using a fold up table as our dining room table, chairs as bedside tables, no headboard, old dressers. It's ok though. I would rather buy things I really like as I have the money for them than get cheaper stuff I might not like just to have furniture.

To where we felt comfortable and like it was our home, 6 - 8 months. But it is an neverending process, cause there are always little things I want to add/change.
