Spinoff on camp counselors

I saw on Barb's post that someone said camp counselors get paid a salary. (hourly rate.)

I was a camp counselor for a few years and I just wanted to give an FYI.
This "salary" is nothing. I worked 8 weeks, 5 days a week, from 8-4 and the first year I got paid $1000.
That works out to $1.60/hr. I wouldn't really call that a salary. As I worked more summers, I got more money, but not much. I was dependent on those tips.
Camp counselors get no breaks. They are with your child from the second they arrive at camp until the second they leave. I understand it is hard to part with more money after paying for the camp itself, but if your child likes his or her counselor and had a good summer, please give a tip.

Of course, there are extenuating circumstances (like what happened with Barb's Maddie).

I have to agree. I was also a counselor at a sleep away camp, and we got slightly better than the above post. I got $2.25/hr. I lived for tips.

I did the counselor thing twice. I'd agree. The only thing that would get me to do it again would be so that Abby could go to camp for free or for a discounted rate.

I agree! My sister worked at a day camp in Montauk and she made about the same...she really did depend on the tips.

And Lauren, I agree that Maddie's case was a different one, but a normal, run of the mill camp and counselor should be tipped IMO.

I also pretty much got paid nothing. I did it more for having a month at the beach than for the salary. That, and it was a fun job before the reality of paying for college set in.
