Re: spinoff Poll-do you think Long Island is Anti-diverse?
While I don't think LI is exactly "anti - diversity" I definitely think there is a prevailing attitude that is more like "Sure, I welcome all races and cultures....as long as they aren't moving into MY neighborhood". IMO, that's the extent of the acceptance and embracing of diversity on LI.
I didn't used to think this way, but since marrying my DH and moving from my predominantly hispanic neighborhood in to the almost 100% white neighborhood I live in now (with one of the more favorable SDs), I've seen the attitudes first hand. I've gotten the "looks" when I tell people where I grew up. I've gotten the comments on the School District (which are true).
And I think it's no coincidence that the overwhelming majority of the so designated "bad" neighborhoods and SDs happen to also be the most diverse. Whether or not that is a reflection on how welcoming Long Islanders are to diversity, is a different story though.
I agree 100%. LI has been listed as the most racially diveded sububrs in the U.S. It's sad but true.

Re: spinoff Poll-do you think Long Island is Anti-diverse?
I don't know if it is anti-diversity, but it certainly not all for it either.
Echoing what others have said, it's like- yeah we want diversity- but not where we live- it's fine for other places.
Where I went to H.S. we did not have ONE black student- not ONE. How is that normal or even healthy? My SD made SURE they kept out students in the less affluent areas and sent them to other "mixed" SDs... it's terrible. If you live in the town, you should not be drawn out of the SD.

Re: spinoff Poll-do you think Long Island is Anti-diverse?
Regards of people's individual opinions on how diverse we feel Long Island is, fact is fact. The fact of the matter is that Long Island is the third most segregated suburb in the COUNTY!
Think about it, how many towns do we know that are predominantly one race? Long Island as a whole if you look purely at numbers is diverse, yes. However, if you look at the distribution of the different races and cultures, you will see that although many nationalities exist here, they are usually clustered into certain areas.
This is fact and anyone can google that info to find many different studies, articles and sources that support this.

All I can really add to what already has been said is that we have been discussing areas in which to buy houses. When we mention areas that are more diverse ethnically, we are told that that area "has really gone down..." even though we don't really see it.

Sadly, The reality is that racism still exists and it exists in every city and state. But, if we do move back to LI, I would definetly consider Rockville Centre! I found that town to be very welcoming of diversity.
I grew up in RVC. I'm not really sure whether I'd characterize the town as being welcoming of diversity. While there were many groups of minorities at the high school, the students tended to only socialize with their own ethnic/racial group. Our neighborhood was also very white. I'm not sure how different RVC is from other areas in LI. Of course, LI seems much more diverse than CT. Outside of the cities, there is very little diversity. DH grew up in CT. I don't think there were any African American or Latino students in his class. The 1 Jewish family in his town celebrated Christmas b/c everybody else did.

My high school (on long island) was the same way. I believe that there was 1 african american family in the whole hs.

So then Red....as a minority family moves into an area & the school becomes more diverse...some a$$clown spray paints their house to tell them they aren't wanted....hhhmmm doesn't sound like a diverse melting pot to me.
What I dont understand about Valley stream and the what happened there is that there were Swasticas (SP) on the garage but the family was not jewish and Valley Stream is very diverse
Its disgusting and I applaud that family for saying screw you i'm not moving
