Spinoff to all the McCain/Obama Bashing
Are any of you concerned about the effects these nasty, drawn out campaigns will have on the ability of our next President to get things done?
I am--both campaigns have taken nasty turns at times and ugly things have been said, by the supporters as well as the campaigns. So I really wonder if elected officials are going to put their feelings aside next January, roll their sleeves up, and try to work with the next President.

I don't see how this campaign is any different than past elections in regards to smear tactics. The only difference is that this election is getting more press due the the fact that regardless of the outcome, we will either have our first African American or first woman in the White House.

whoever wins ANY election; the "losing" party always spends the next 4-8 years complaining about everything they do

I agree with everyone above me. I think attacking the other party is expected, but I think both candidates should avoid pitting parts of the country against eachother because we CAN avoid that, and our country's leader should be trying to encourage solidarity rather than divisiveness.

Yeah, but you really need parties...How else would we pick candidates? Conceivibly we could have thousands of candidates for every office b/c any Tom, Dyck or Harry could run for office.
KWIM?
I agree the partisan crap stinks but I don't know how you could avoid it b/c we need parties.
It takes a LOT of money to run for any office so I think if there was some sort of cap on spending for campaigns that could help b/c then you could have lesser heard parties like the Independent or Green parties heard from.

I def agree that there needs to be a cap on campaign spending. if for no other reason, it is SINFUL! $130M a week on ads??

seriously - i mean, i know much of it is donations but if the american people donated to other causes; it would make much more of a difference than ANY candidate

Yeah, it's pretty sickening.
It's funny though, I think the campaigns reflect the mindset of the this country though; think about it...
Everything is BIGGER, BETTER, larger than life (think "my super sweet 16" and "mc mansions") and so is this year's campaigning.
I never thought of that before or noticed the parallelism but these campaigns really do reflect us as a society to some degree.

it is actually nauseating to think about it I would love to see someone do a study on ads and find out just how effective they really are! I don't know about anyone else, but when I see hate ads from both sides, it just makes me lose respect for them (and by 'them' I mean the one's who say: "I am _______ and I approve this message")

Re: Spinoff to all the McCain/Obama Bashing
I agree.. I dont like the ads at all.
Ya know that music video where it shows all of the costs of a typical music video, and then the singer donates it all to charity?
If they did something like that and put it on Youtube i think it would be way more effective, and would do a lot more good... jmo

Re: Spinoff to all the McCain/Obama Bashing
Invariably when they come on I click to a different channel. I just can't be bothered. So many times the quotes in them are taken out of context so it's misleading and I put no validity in them.

I'm not as worried about that as I am about how divided the country is/will be.

while partisanship increased during that period, I really think it IS due to the media.
during the 90's, an ugly creature was born.... the 24 hour news network. prior to that, it was only cnn, and it didn't have much of a market-share.
those b@stards need to fill 24 hours worth of tv time. they don't fill it with legit international news... they go for the gossipy pundit junk that gets ratings and stirs-up emotions. nothing better than an us vs. them movie plot ever since, politics has been especially messed-up, and the worst political spin gets the most air time.

ITA. You are right, that's when everything changed. I don't recall the Carter/Reagan or Reagan/Mondale campagins being as nasty, but then I was a kid. Some things probably went over my head. Bush Sr. started the nasty ads, but the 24 hour news media is a whole new animal. They love to stir up controversy. So as long as we have the media, red will be pitted against blue (and vice versa).
