Spinoff to Ang's post from earlier: straws

At what age did your child learn to drink from a straw?

I was stunned tonight when DH showed me that DD (almost 14 months) can drink from a straw Chat Icon We've never even tried it with her before, we don't ever use straws, and she's never used a sippy cup with a straw. I can't believe she knew what to do right away-- he says he showed her today and then she just started sucking the water up Chat Icon

Well we were at Friendly's last Friday & they brought milk w/ a big straw & she had no idea how to do it. I guess we'll be working on this. She does like to bite on it though

I was floored that she knew how to do it Chat Icon Now if it was food, she'd want nothing to do with it Chat Icon

Re: Spinoff to Ang's post from earlier: straws

DD did at I'd say 7 months...whenever they start using sippy cups. She never tilted back her bottle so I went to the straw cups and she got it right away. But she tries to suck regular sippy cups like a straw so we don't use those at all - just the straw cups.

Actually quite young. A friend who is a speech/food therapist with kids was telling me about triplets she was working with on how she was surprised that one of the 3 was able to drink thru a straw at 9 mos. She said "Wonder if Troy can do it" So I tried, he was 6 mos. And he did! I did not do it often as he was not having much more than formula at the time, but he LOVES to drink from a straw now!

Almost all of his sippy cups are w/ straws

DD uses the sippy cup with a straw for her water. She is 8.5 mos. and we have been using it for a couple of weeks now. It took her 2-3 times to figure out that she did not need to tilt it up, but other than that she has been pretty good with it.

We didn't try with Kaitee untill she was 10 or 11 months old. She could do it when we tried.

Brooke has been able to drink from one when we first let her try at 7 months old.

Re: Spinoff to Ang's post from earlier: straws

I had no idea DS could drink through a straw until one evening we were at a restaurant and I was drinking water with a straw. He kept beckoning for the cup so I gave it a shot and was shocked that he was a pro! It was around his 1st birthday.

From that point on i completely switched to sippy cups with straws because he drinks a TON of water now because I think he just likes it.

About the same here. Between 6 and 7 months when I introduced the straw sippy cup.

13 months.
I brought her with my to the last day of school and they had little milk containers, so I gave her one with the straw and she just started sucking! I was floored because it took her about 4 or 5 months to figure out the sippy cup!
She loves straws!!

Julia learned how to use a straw early, I think it was before she was a year.

Kara drank from a straw at a very young age. If I recall maybe 6-7 months. I was surprised when she actually did it. I remember she was crying because she wanted my glass. So I filled up one with water and said if you can drink from it you can have it. Thinking she couldn't and she proved me wrong.

DD can drink pretty well with the straws - but I have to be careful since she prefers to take a full sips then pull it out and play with it

Re: Spinoff to Ang's post from earlier: straws

*Maybe* 9 or 10 months Chat Icon I can't remember, but she's been drinking from a straw for a long time. I never used a regular sippy cup...she didn't really grasp the concept of tilting her head back to get the water. DH and I always drink from straws so she just picked it up from us.

With DS 10 months and with DD 6 months. I introduced he straw sippy cups and that is what they took to. Once they learn from that straw everything other straw is easy.
