Spinoff to calling adults by first name...
I received a phone call from my 6 yr olds friend. "Hi Christine, what's up, can such and such come over for a play date?"
I was taken aback to say the least. What's up????? Am I your friend?
Opinions?

Re: Spinoff to calling adults by first name...
Depends on your relationship. "What's up?" does make me chuckle though, because it's not something you'd expect a kid to say to an adult. And I certainly wouldn't let my kid talk to their teacher or another adult with whom they have a formal relationship that way. But a close friend or aunt/uncle, I probably wouldn't think much of it as long as the child was polite & friendly otherwise.

Normal. Sorry, I know you don't want to hear it as I was taken aback when my oldest was younger and I was called by my first name.

Re: Spinoff to calling adults by first name...
Definitely not normal. The children around me do not speak like this. I know some use first names, but my children's friends do not. They either say Mrs. Last name or Mrs. First letter of my last name. A few will say x's mom if they don't know my daughter's last name. The few who do use first names it seems to be with parents who are good friends with the child's parents. But most use last names. I can't see my children's friends doing this.

You don't even know the kid well? Then yeah that's odd.

I think it's hysterical. He probably was thinking what would sound normal or grown up. I don't think he meant it offensive at all

Me too! Or I'm sure he heard someone say it and doesn't realize the context or informality at that age. I means he's only 6.

I agree! Actually my DD's good friend has said this to me, and it made me laugh. I really don't care what people call me. I'm not uptight like that though

My opinion (and I know based on the responses to my post in the original thread that I am in the minority and will probably get flamed ) is that is completely inappropriate and would have never been allowed when I was growing up. It wouldn't fly in my house with my kids either. To each their own about how they choose to raise their kids but I don't agree with the sentiment of " that is normal" or 'that's just the way that it is now'. It is only that way if parents are ok with it and don't feel like they want or need to teach their kids different. Although obviously if a kid is rotten but nevertheless calls you Mrs. that doesn't mean the kid is automatically respectful but Mr. or Mrs. or some form of greeting that differentiates a friend from an adult is definitely a form of respecting an adult. That being said-- If my kid did it I might chuckle bc its absolutely absurd but then I would explain to them.. why its not apporpriate

But we don't know if the mom spoke to him about it when he go off the phone. If this happened to me, I would laugh at the message and wouldn't think anything of it. It could be something he picked up recently since he is only 6. He probably just learned what's up and uses it all the time . I doubt a 6yr was thinking this parent is my equal so I'm going to leave an informal message, lol! Sometimes it takes several attempts to get a kid out of a habit. I'm still trying to get my son to stop saying "what the "
Honestly, I find it odd that the child called and not the parent.

I think it's a little forward of a kid to call and make a playdate with an adult.

I don't think it's bad for the kid to ask you if your child can come over for a playdate ......
I think it's odd that she said "HEY Christine, WHAT"S UP? "

Yes - especially if you aren't close.
My son will be 6 next week and all of our play dates are texts between the parents.

Im in the minority right there with you as I have recently learned and I am quite surprised actally. Btw, I agree.. a 6 year old.. or any year old friend of your child should NOT be the one calling you for a play date. A cowoker told me the other day that her 7 year old's daughters friend texted my coworker to ask her to tell her daughter to go on facebook. I was floored..
