spinoff to car services.. NYC taxi cabs...
How does it work with car seats? Whenever we go in we go crazy trying to take subways everywhere because we can't for the life of us figure out what to do about taking a taxi cab with no carseat?? What to NYer's do? Do they all carry babies on their lap? Do they all carry carseats where ever they go (I have never seen this)? Or do they all just take the subway?
We are going in next week and a cab would just be so much easier!

We used the Graco Snugride (with no base) when DD was still in it but after that, we held her on our laps.
Livery vehicles are exempt from the car seat rule. We didn't take them that often to be too worried about not having a car seat.

I mostly took the subway everywhere but on the rare occasion I had to take a cab I just put DS on my lap and strapped him in against me with the seatbelt.

I'm not sure, but I think that might be even worse than not having him in the belt at all. All of your body weight will be going at X miles per hour, and DS will absorb all of that impact where the belt is. Adults get huge bruises from the seatbelt after an accident.
Luckily, we haven't had to cross that path yet, and at this point, DS is just in a booster, so he's almost OK with just the belt. Since we have no plans to go in a NYC taxi any time soon, hopefully we can completely avoid the issue altogether.

You know, you are probably very right. In all honesty I took a cab with DS maybe 2 times tops in his 15 months of life in the city, we're subway people , but, I never thought about your point and it's very valid and I'm thanking my lucky stars that nothing every happened.

on my car seat there is actually a sticker to show what to do without a base if you have the infant carrier.
without the car seat/infant carrier at all, hold them close to you is what a police officer told me. the strap could actually hurt them.
i tend to walk or train it without a car seat though.

My seat can be used without a base as well if we didn't have it with us by any chance. We have the Graco Sungride. When we had our car seat inspected, they guy showed us how to install it without the base.

We try to walk or take the subway too but usually a cab is much easier. If we do, I just hold DD on my lap or she sits in the seat next to me. Luckily we never go too far or at high speeds, but it still makes me really nervous. With DD#2, shes so little so we just drive in when we're with her.
