Spinoff to Cemetary visits: Do you think the concept of a cemetary is creepy?
When I lost my 19 year old cousin, his mom and then his dad all to cancer and all within 18 months of each other, the concept of the cemetary became very upsetting to me. I didn't want to "leave them there"
(Now you all think I am nuts).
I understand it is what many people do (my entire family) and that is our society's norm, but the entire thing freaks me out. I passed by a cemetary last week and they had created a huge new lot for what will more deaths and chills ran down my spine "bodies will go there"
What are your thoughts?

Re: Spinoff to Cemetary visits: Do you think the concept of a cemetary is creepy?
I'm sure if I thought about it enough it would freak me out, but culturally it's so ingrained. When I was little we used to go to my grandfathers grave (he died before I was born) and I'd run around the cemetary picking dandelions. It was strange going back after my grandmother died after having gone there WITH her so many times, but that's also why I continue it, because it was something important to her.
My mom and her isibs and cousins took PICTURES at gravesites when they were little, all dressed in their sunday finest

I have to say some of the really old cemetaries on Long Island, like from the 1700s are interesting.
However, Masoleums (sp?) creep me out! Something about the bodies being out just scares me. That Ashley Judd movie in which she is trapped in one is too scary. I'm shivering as I type.

I'd love to live near a cemetary...no noisy or nosey neighbors.
I definitely would not want to live too close to any deceased family members tho, I think THAT's creepy.

I felt like that when my Grandfather died...I didn't want to leave him there but I came to terms with it. We go every so often and I feel close to him there but I know that he is always with me though

Re: Spinoff to Cemetary visits: Do you think the concept of a cemetary is creepy?
On occasion my thoughts about cemeteries get a little morbid... I don't like seeing open graves, like when they've just been dug for someone new. But I generally find cemeteries peaceful and don't think about that stuff.

Re: Spinoff to Cemetary visits: Do you think the concept of a cemetary is creepy?
I never really thought much about it. I guess because I've been blessed not to have to visit them.
My grandfathers passed away before I was born and my grandmothers passed when I was young. And honestly, I don't even know where they are buried
I always said I wanted to be cremated. That way I can always go where my loved ones are. If they move they can take me with them.
We have DH's dads ashes in an urn on a shelf in our house. His sister has some as well. He feels comfort knowing his dad is always with him. Also, when DH was in the hospital, I was able to take some of his dad's ashes and put them in a prayer box charm and hung it in his room at the hospital. It brought comfort to DH's family and myself that he had his dad with him, watching over him.

I want to be creamated when I die, I do not agree with burying a body. What is in the ground is NOT what I remember as the person that I knew!

I don't know about the word creepy, but I don't really like them. I think there are other ways to memorialize a person. So much money is spent on funerals. The price of a casket is ubelievable. My friend that just died was creamated. The more that I think about it, the more I think that is what I want. I don't like to think of my body rotting under the ground in a fancy box. (sorry if that was too graphic)

I am the same way but at the same time the thought of a cemetary never really bothered me...I know that I don't need to go there to be with my deceased relatives but sometimes I find it soothing & comforting to be there with them...

Re: Spinoff to Cemetary visits: Do you think the concept of a cemetary is creepy?
As I answered in the other post I went almost weekly as a child and now I go for holidays.
I don't find them creepy at all. I actually compare the atmosphere to a church or other religious place. I find them peaceful and holy and while I can't say I "enjoy" going I do find peace when I go.
These threads are SO interesting to me because the Italian attitude towards cemetaries is so different. On All Soul's Day Italians actually go and sit on the graves ( they are above ground in my town ) and you go "visit" each grave and visit with the living relatives. . . it is considered a shame to have a family grave that is empty without a family member sitting there - and grave sites are tended to on a weekly basis. . . I was lucky enough to be there in 2006 and it was an amazing experience!

I was born on All Soul's Day...so I kinda think of myself as the anti-death.

Re: Spinoff to Cemetary visits: Do you think the concept of a cemetary is creepy?
i think they are comforting places.
i get a sense of peace when i visit my grandparents' grave. i cry out of sadness, but it's also a place that i know where they are. i talk out loud to them and tell them everything. i even bring pictures to leave there. although i know "they" are not there, it's a representation of them.
on the other hand, when one of my closest friends died, they creamated her. i'm still devastated that i can't visit "her" and never got to say goodbye. although it's not all about me, i enjoy having a place to go and mourn. it comforts me, even though it's upsetting.
they keep my grandparents' cemetary sparking clean and beautiful. it's so peaceful there--i've even seen deer and wild peacocks.

Up until I buried my son...I always thought of cemetary's as a little spooky...but, now when I visit I get a different sense...a sense of calmness...although all I do is cry when I'm there...

I've never thought of cemeteries as creepy, they have always fascinated me. Especially the old ones. Now, I know the cemetery will bring me a sense of comfort.

Re: Spinoff to Cemetary visits: Do you think the concept of a cemetary is creepy?
I think Hollywood and the movies have made cemeteries "creepy" to add to our fear. I don't think they are really. You wouldn't see me walking through one at night. Nobody really close to me is buried in a cemetery. They're cremated and my mother has the remains in an urn at her home.
