Spinoff to Company Holiday party ... for teachers!
What, if anything, does your school do for the holidays?
Our school itself doesn't do anything. Every year a few teachers (actually now it's the head school aide who does it) puts together a big party at a catering hall.
It's $45 and includes open bar, DJ and a buffet. It's at a local catering hall.
Personally I've never gone. I think $45 is a lot to pay, and I'd want DH to go (most bring their spouces) and that would be $90.
It has always been fine but it's getting to the point where you get an attitude from the administration if you DON'T go. One admin in particular is really pushing the issue. She came over the loud speaker last week saying that she EXPECTS everyone to go -- as if we should feel obligated.
They say that we can't do anything else --- that this is how it's gotta be. I'm just wondering how things are done in other schools because it would be nice to celebrate with everyone, but I just can't swing a party where I have to shell out $90.

We have to pay for ours also.
Honestly, I can understand why - if the school paid, probably everyone would go, and that $$ has to come from somewhere. It would be just another thing used against teachers at budget vote time.

It's at our principal's house (we have a small school). Everyone is supposed to bring a dish.

Re: Spinoff to Company Holiday party ... for teachers!
Mine is $60, at a place in Rockville Centre. Is it worth the money? I don't know, but I go every year and always have a good time. It is nice to see people let loose and there are always good stories the next morning.
However, there is not pressure on me (other than from my friends) to attend. I would not be happy if I was expected to pay money to attend. Make the decision that's right for you!

Re: Spinoff to Company Holiday party ... for teachers!
My school (NYC) was restructured in '04, and prior to that, we never got any pressure because the staff was huge.
Now that my school is smaller, with a staff of about 45, my principal does put pressure on people to go, or at least he did pressure me, since I was the literacy coach last year and he felt that as part of the "cabinet" I needed to be there.
It's unfair of your principal to do that, IMO. It's one thing if the school was shelling out but it's your money. I don't think I am going to mine this year and I don't think the principal will hassle me but it won't change my mind.

Re: Spinoff to Company Holiday party ... for teachers!
We actually do something after the holidays at the end of the 1st term. Last year it was $25.00 per person (the admin picked up the difference) at a swanky lounge in NYC with horrible appitizers.
Some people don't go because they don't drink and appetizers aren''t justified for $25.00.
This year I am looking into some places on the eastside of Manhattan for a pub-like place with better apps for a lower price!

Our holiday party is $55. I think it is a lot b/c of the open bar and considering I am driving maybe I will have one drink. PLus I don't want to drink in front of the principal and my chairperson.

Re: Spinoff to Company Holiday party ... for teachers!
I would rather it be something that is maybe $20-25 without open bar (since I'd have to drive home to LI from Brooklyn) and without the DJ even --- just people hanging out and having a good time.
Honestly I wouldn't even mind a school-organized thing in the cafeteria that everyone puts together! $45 is just nuts to me!

Re: Spinoff to Company Holiday party ... for teachers!
Even in the Hudson Valley, we have to pay for ours as well.
Its at a local restaurant with full dinner and regular drinks (non-alcohol) for adult drinks you pay extra.
We do a Secret Snowman during the last week before vacation and the Thurs. before break is the holiday party.
The best part is one of the teachers plays "Santa" and goes through the "naughty and nice" list. Always a hoot!

Re: Spinoff to Company Holiday party ... for teachers!
It is free for us and is at the Grand Prospect Hall in Brooklyn. It is not a holiday party - it is an "Annual Gathering". They call it that so the people who do not celebrate holidays can partake. We all call it a Christmas party anyway. It we wish to bring SOs, it is $35 to bring them.

My school does a happy hour thing where it is $5. Drinks are not included and there is no real food. It's just really a gathering of us all.

Re: Spinoff to Company Holiday party ... for teachers!
We have a party every year and it ranges from $35-$75 depending on where it is. This year, it's $35 at a local pub w/ beer, wine, soda and a buffet dinner.Although it is kind of annoying to have to pay for it ourselves, I really don't mind. I go every year and it is always fun. It's hysterical to get a bunch of teachers together with alcohol, dancing and most importantly no kids There's always fun stories to tell the next day. There is no pressure to go from administrators, but our colleagues do peer pressure eachother

Re: Spinoff to Company Holiday party ... for teachers!
we usually do a restaurant thing where we rent out a room...it is a dinner with only soda included and is low key. It is usually like $30 a person, and no spouses come. It is on a week night and the turn out is always pretty good.
