Spinoff to: Confused- Teething overnight and CIO-kids-
For those that do CIO - if you don't go in at night how do you know if they are crying b.c they are sick or have a fever rather than just waking and wanting mommy and daddy etc.?

from my experience, I can usually tell from the way my son is crying what his need is.

This is why CIO never worked for us.

Re: Spinoff to: Confused- Teething overnight and CIO-kids-
This is my tormet as well. I find it very confusing. Although DD took to CIO very well & quickly (only cried 2 nights, and not much crying either night), and then stopped. She has been silent every night since (it's been about 3-4 weeks since we did it). 2 nights ago she started making lots of noise throughout the night, and then crying, so that's when I figured out it was teething because I don't think she would have started crying after sleeping through the night for 3-4 weeks, KWIM?
So, my wordy summary-- if they do CIO and sleep quietly for nights upon nights, weeks upon weeks, and then they start crying one night or 2 nights in a row, I feel like something is wrong.

We never do CIO. I always go and comfort DS if he needs me.

Re: Spinoff to: Confused- Teething overnight and CIO-kids-
See I think this is in part why I can't do CIO - I just can't sit and let her scream if she could be in pain or having a problem. The thing is she screams the same way when she gets a shot as she does if you leave her in the crib and she wants out. I just wondered what moms did in those cases.

Yeah, that is a different situation then. Thankfully DD quieted down quickly when we did CIO, otherwise I would have never done it. And I'm surprised DD did so well honestly b/c she's a fiercely stubborn girl.
Maybe there is another method you can use to help with her sleeping?

We did CIO...I say 'did' because now he goes down on his own so there is no crying it out.
When he cries at night we wait a couple minutes...lately I'm starting to learn that the wimper is nothing and he goes back to sleep. A full out cry with a sound of panic means get to him now and even if it's just to be held we do it for a while. Those are far and few between.

Re: Spinoff to: Confused- Teething overnight and CIO-kids-
There are times when Jack is screaming like a lunatic but I know it's just to get out.
Then, there are times when I feel as if something could be wrong and I go in and get him. The only time I was right with that was when he was soaked.
Most of the time they are ok.
It's hard to do - and no one likes to listen to their children cry - but it doesn't take that long for children to get CIO.

Re: Spinoff to: Confused- Teething overnight and CIO-kids-
At night DS rarely wakes (he did a lot when teething though), so if he is awake and crying for any length of time, I assume something is wrong and go comfort him. Usually, something is wrong. I don't run to him at the first little peep since he will cry out in his sleep sometimes, but if he keeps crying, I go.
I tried CIO for naps, but he was hysterical, so I could not do that anymore.

Thank you for sharing your experiences!
See she gets hysterical - so that is why I don't think CIO (and I don't think I could do it) - but I don't know what WOULD work. She doesn't go down IN my arms - but she drinks a bottle then rolls around on our bed for a little while to go down without us touching her - then when she is out DH puts her in the crib - when we put her in the crib and read to hear or rub her and say good night and leave she gets hysterical and does stop, choking type of hysterical. Some nights she sleeps thru the night others not - I never know from one night to the next - she will sleep thru the night for a week, then not once in 2 weeks, then for 3 nights, then not for a few nights, then one night, but not the next etc. When she wakes generally it is only once and it is usually between 3 and 5 - but occasionally at 11 or 1 am (but then not again until 5 or 7 am). I don't give milk when she wakes but do end up giving water - which she will drink 1 - 7 ozs of depending on the night. So I don't know if she is just thirsty as she will go back down right after (if I don't give her the water she will stay up and want to play or just stay up for a LONG time. The thing is there are times she wakes, whimpers for about 2 minutes then goes back to sleep - so she is capable of going back to sleep on her own.

Re: Spinoff to: Confused- Teething overnight and CIO-kids-
Honestly, it may sound crazy but I can tell...I watch him on the monitor and by his cries and the way he is acting I can tell if it is just him wanting mommy/to play or he is sick. In fact, the one time he was sick - I said to my DH - I am going to pick him up b/c his cry just doesn't sound right - he was like cough/crying and just writhing around instead of standing up right away like he usually does... For us, his behavior is a dead give away. And, honestly, if he wakes up in the middle of the night - even if I let him CIO - I watch him on the monitor the ENTIRE time until he goes to sleep.
For us, we had to resort to CIO but, our situation was much worse than the one you describe. I will say I never thought it would work either. My DS is so so stubborn - the first night he was so hysterical i didn't thinkk I could do it. But, he learned just as quickly the good habits and he did the bad habits... Things are still not perfect but, they are livable which they weren't before!

We do what Ang does. Most of the time, if he is teething or overtired, he fades quickly, but if it is something more, it last long.

I think this is such a good point! Watch your monitor. I learned my lesson with this. One afternoon I put dd in for a nap and she usually cries maybe 5 minutes. This day she kept crying and crying and I waited and finally (after like 10-15 minutes) I went in to check on her and she had pulled her diaper off (it was a hot day and I just put her down in her diaper) and peed everywhere! So the poor thing was wet and cold. I felt terrible! Now I always use my monitor!

Re: Spinoff to: Confused- Teething overnight and CIO-kids-
Have you looked at "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" yet? The author advocated CIO (which I just can't do either), but there is a lot of good info in there about sleep rhythms. After reading it, I thought maybe DS was going to bed too late. Sure enough, I started putting him to bed earlier and earlier and it was easier and easier to get him to go to sleep on his own. After a couple weeks of good night sleep, his morning nap kind of fell into place too. His afternoon nap still isn't great, but it's such an improvement.
It also could be that he just isn't teething much at the moment either--I think that messed up his sleep initially.
CIO isn't for everyone. If your heart really isn't in it, don't do it.
