spinoff to cord blood banking... can you use it more than once?
As a spinoff to the cord blood banking question...
for those of you who did bank it.... do you know if you can use it more than once? or if it is like a one time use type of thing? a coworker was just telling me recently that someone in her family banked their daughters cord blood, and she was able to use it for herself for something she needed... which i thought was great... but then that for me thinking - what if her daughter needs it? is it all used up after one use? and then you don't pay the storage fees anymore etc? or can you use it more than once?

I think as of right now, your child can't use their own cord blood...there is still testing going on, but for right now, its only family members that can use it

I think it depends on how much they get. Sometimes they aren't even able to get enough to store

It would depend on how much is stored, how many sections they store it in, and how much is needed for a treatment. I think the Viacord collection bag has 5 compartments - a newer feature they were advertising. Not sure about others.

I actually JUST saw this last night on one of hte pamphlets I had at home. I didn't see the compartments advertised anywhere on their site... but i saw it on the pamphlet. I like that..
and it looks like your child can use his/her own for certain things... I still need to look more into it.

I honestly don't know much about how it's used or what it might be used for in the future, but I think for any kind of transplant, you would probably use it up. And, I think there might not even be enough for an adult to use. I'm thinking the 5 sections are for newer possible uses - Viacord mentioned regenerative medicine.
I knew I wanted to bank, but deciding which company to use was difficult. I actually used Lifebank for my kids (stored placenta blood and placenta too), but I almost went with Viacord this time.
