Spinoff to CPS, this has been bothering me for a few days now.
DH and I went investment property shopping upstate this past week and one house we visited has really got me heated.
The upstairs apartment was kinda dumpy, but it's single guy, who cares?
The main floor was really nice, new furniture, clean, nicely decorated, 50-something inch flat screen.......
Then we went to the basement which is part of the main floor rental........well.....
The whole basement was pretty much unlit and unfinished completely. There was a sectioned off room which had no closets, but a bed and a computer with industrial carpeting.
I saw the teenager outside and figured this is where he wants to sleep, typical teen.
THEN I saw the toddler bed in the room and I got a little upset.
THEN we went further into the basement and discovered another makeshift room behind the boiler/burner/whatever it was. There were no lights in the room, but a door that leads to the cellar to get outside.
All this plus it stank of cat feces and there were 2 litter boxes down there and 4 cats.
I had to leave, and if I would have seen the tenant, I would have blasted them, but they weren't there.
What would you do?

That sounds really creepy to me and it would have bothered me also.
Where there no other bedrooms upstairs or something?

No, it was only the 1 beautifully decorated bedroom on the main floor.
It was really odd that the main floor looked so nice, and then downstairs......

I had to re-read that- so basically the parents were living in luxury while there childern lived like that?
i would have questioned what was going on- "as a potential landlord"

Well, that's exactly what we don't want to get involved with, being a slumlord. I refused to even see the 3rd apartment.
The agent didn't see the house beforehand or she said she would have never taken us to see it.
