Spinoff to "happy of price going up"
How do people feel about "alternative" way of living?
I would love to walk around and go shopping and find a neighborhood that would allow me to shop by walking to the stores.
But I don't know this is feasible.
I have a baby with a stroller. I would have to walk 1 mile to the nearest small grocery store. Over 2 miles to go to Walbaums.
And in light of the post with the woman held at knife point in Deep Park and the crime spree of those kids in Mineola area, how can I feel safe walking around saving gas while I might fear for my life and DS' on our way to the store?

That's why I love Queens. I am within walking distance of everything!
Within 3 blocks I have
-several pizzerias
-A grocery store
-Duane Reade
_Fruit stand
-pasta store
-pork store
-Italian specialty store
-Gym
-hardware store
-paint store
-several discount variety stores including 1 major chain
-carpet/flooring
-candy store
-bars
-several laundromats

I live in Bay Terrace Queens and I can walk to do alot of things
however there is a price to pay for it
the super market is very $$$ and the price of homes with in walking distance are not feasible for us to buy- besides a co-op 99% of the single family houses are over $1M

there are a few things going on in your post.
first, I don't know where you live, but unless you live in the scariest of places, I don't think you should be fearing for your life when you walk out of your home.
you can get jacked anywhere, even in Beverly Hills. you can't live your life based on that possibility.
in terms of distance...one mile isn't far to walk, especially WITH a stroller. I did it every day for 11 years while I was dating my husband. he lived just over 1 mile away from me, and I did it WITH grocieries from MY supermarket. YES...I wialked a mile carrying 3 or 4 bags of food. It is not impossibile.
the other thing is LI is a suburban development in terms of commuting. It was DESIGNED for people to drive to and fro.
if you want and feel you NEED a better public transport system, the PEOPLE need to lobby the LOCAL GOVT get involved...MAKE them give you what you want/need.

I've done a ton of walking with my stroller. No, I have never walked to the grocery store to do some shopping but that's because I go once every two weeks and wouldn't have enough room in my stroller to cart home all the crap I buy.
Anytime can happen at any time. We can't live in fear because of what happens day to day.

ETA: I agree about not living in fear. Where I live is probably a lot worse than most LI neighborhoods in terms of crime, but I choose not to live in fear. I've lived here all my life and I feel safe. I don't walk around in a daze with dark sunglasses and a loud iPod. I'm aware of my surroundings, but I don't feel unsafe in the neighborhood.
I would love to have a backyard and more space, but the idea of driving 20 minutes to go grocery shopping blows my mind. granted I drive about 5 minutes to go to the supermarket rather than the little grocery 2 blocks away because there are more choices, but if I ever need anything it's walking distance. God forbid my car breaks down or there is an oil crisis, I can still get what i need.

I would love if my area had more nearby in terms of stores that would fulfill my everyday needs. I think the thing I miss the most about Queens was the fact that I drove only to work, and out to LI to see my family and maybe once a week to a store that wasn't walkable. A tank of gas lasted me more than a week.
We have lots of open space where I live, which people are fighting to preserve. But that means that nothing's really walkable. We have very limited public transit.

No, but there are small changes, like consolidating trips. So if the grocery store is near the dry cleaner, make sure you do both in one trip. Maybe go grocery shopping only every 2 weeks instead of every week. Or go shopping on the way home from work, etc.

I don't live in Fear. I lived most of my life in the City. So I am used to being aware of my surrounding.
I take walks in my neighborhood with the stroller.
But the days of my Great Grand-mother are gone. That's just reality! It's not just me. It's also the safety of my child.

this is the problem with the US... most people live in suburbia, and suburbia was designed in the 40's-60's with cars in mind... it's impossible to walk to buy groceries...
we live right in town and can walk to the bakery, dozens of restaurants, and a couple small grocery stores.... but that's not common for suffolk county...
I'll tell you the only reason why I'm happy gas prices are going up... Many people need a serious punch in the pocketbook to begin to live with conservation in mind.... they would continue to drive to work alone in giant SUV's, and run the airconditioner instead of opening windows as long as they could afford it.
Now everyone is FINALLY considering the idea of having a small car to commute to work, and likely will begin doing small things to save on gas / oil/ electricity....
sad it takes something so negative to cause this change....

Yes, that's what we are doing. Still, I feel that I can't really do what I want anymore.
Why should I go through life "stucked" because some people are making money off my back?
Yes, people have walked before. I will hear about how there was no cars before. My grand-parents walked, etc...
Well, we can go back to that but would we call it "progress"?

IMO.... yes! Suburbia sounded like a good idea, but the suburban sprawl and the tremendous amounts of waste it creates makes it less than ideal...
I suspect that 200 years from now, we'll be living in a modern-convenience version of 200 years ago.... compact towns with all of your needs within walking distance..... I grew up in suburbia, and live in town for the last 4 years... it's so much more convenient and comfortable! I HATED driving 10 min just becuase we ran out of milk or wanted some icecream

I think a lot of the "progress" we've made was no progress at all. When i was in Fl I could not believe how much everything was spread out and how far you have to drive for everything!
It all depends on your own choices. I sacrifice space, privacy, peace and quiet living within NYC. if I worked in manhattan I wouldn't even need a car! I might move to the suburbs or country someday, but that comes at a really high price as well.

I am going to start using that to go to local store instead of driving when it's too much to carry. In my neighborhood it's not an old lady thing anymore. EVERYONE uses them in all kinds of stores.

Things are already begining to transition, it just doesn't happen over night.
It is difficult to "retro-fit" suburn areas, you can change zoning to allow commerical to mix within residential but it will take time for it to flow because land has to become available. Pedestrian/bicycle traffic lanes are being planned into new developments, but it's hard to put them into existing street scapes. Often times it would require widening the Right-of-Way and taking private land. We had an instance in my town where people were screaming for bike paths along a main road, well when the town tried to acquire the land to do it then all of the residents were up in arms about losing 10' feet of their front yards. The plan ended up getting cancelled because of public opposition.
I work in civil engineering and for the past almost 10 years developers have been trying to create subdivisions that are like little towns - similar to Celebration, FL - some towns have been very opposed to these types of developments, thinking that people would rather have large parcels of land than a tigher comminuty with lots of open space. It is just recently that towns have been requesting this type of development.
In technology over the past few years we have seen hybrids, natural gas vehicles, bio-disel and fuel cell cars. Things are starting but none of these changes take place over night - it all takes time.
I also agree that 1-2 miles isn't far to walk. People are just so used to driving everywhere that the idea of walking a mile seems daunting, but really it takes 15 minutes. DH and I car pool, I run errands at lunch, those errands are always on foot.

A mile isn't far. Neither is two. I walk to the grocery store every week, which is about a mile away. With a stroller, the walk might be even easier, because you wouldn't have to carry all the bags in your arms. Especially in the nice weather, taking a nice walk is a lovely way to spend your day.
I don't know where you live, but I can't live in fear that I might get attacked. I know that my neighborhood is pretty safe most of the time and I feel confident walking around. I don't think I could live in a neighborhood I didn't feel safe walking through.

I live in Charlotte and walk everywhere.
I take the baby 2 miles to Target, then the 2 miles home with the bottom of the stroller loaded up and at times the backpack I am wearing.
Grocery store, same thing but less then a mile away.
We ride our bike to get frozen yogurt.
Walk the 2 miles to church.
Walk to the park.
We walk to the YMCA and he runs around the soccer fields.
The most we have walked single trip was 8 miles. If there is a sidewalk, I will walk there. I love walking, so does the boy.

I'm not really sure what you're asking/saying in this thread.
At first i thought you were saying you wish you could be more "green" but it's hard where you live, but now it seems like you are defending having to drive and use so much gas? I'm not sure.
My answer is the same though. it's all about choices.
I could make the choice to take public transportation to work and spend 6 hours on the train every day. I just can't swing that.
