Re: Spinoff to Heartworm post...no flames please
I had missed when my dd was born maybe 2 months.. THEN!!! I saw a film on tv called the monsters that live inside of me If you have children especially its a really really bad idea to not give these pills every month.. I have to also say its terrible for your dog to get... Absolutely no flames here but look into what that heartworm can do to your dog and even worse you and your family... I was very ignornt for long time about this.. I am sure you would re think it ..

No I dont give him heartworn medicine. My mom has never given any of our dogs heartworm medicine over the years (about 5-6 different dogs) and not a single one has ever had a problem.

no flames here either. . . my mom & dad don't give their dogs yearly shots, they just don't believe in it (mindset of .. what did dogs do years ago? they had less (known about) cancers, less illnesses as a whole) their dogs have lived long happy lives.
don't flame me either... just personal belief, i guess.

You know I know exactly what your saying as well .. Same here with every single dog we had growing up.. They all live like forever .. One even lived 18yrs.. so i do get this point.. But I still dont want to take a chance with Lola.. I would die myself if something ever happened.. I am paranoid..

My mom always gave the first shots when they were puppies... then that was it. Her dogs were ALWAYS indoors, outside for minutes to do their business. They never had any problems.
I will eventually follow the same course when I have pets.

i think as adults we take vits etc daily to maintin health - so i think the same w Jack. I do have him get yearly shots & the HW meds. I give him dialy pet vits w glucosamine for maintainance. As we all want our fur babies to live as long as possible i think the vits/shots help cant hurt. JMHO

I am seriously not trying to start anything, just open some minds, but there is a lot of research out there stating that the shots could be more harmful than helpful. Vaccines are a huge part of income for vets and there is a lot of over vaccination. Just keep an open mind, maybe google it a little and read what comes up.

My parents were the same as well and both of our dogs lived to be over 18 years old.
DH and I do give our dog heartworm medication monthly though.

It's hard to fault someone who has done their due diligence at the decisions they make - regardless of what it is. That's the whole point to me, educating yourself and making an informed decision on what is best for your own pet. It's the apathetic decisions that make me crazy.
The subject of vaccinations has come up here before and there have been some great posts on both sides so I'm not trying to start a debate here either, at the request of the OP. Just wanted to put my opinion out there and then make my exit.

Re: Spinoff to Heartworm post...no flames please
from my point I missed a couple of months of roccos HW medicine during the cold months and in his last yearly check up he tested positive the treatment was so hard and he couldnt really do anything for almost 4 months I felt like a horrible mommy for making him go through that.. if you dont treated HW either he can go on OK with his life or die in a couple of months.. For ME the $7 each months for HW medicine worth every penny.

Wow. I am so sorry. Is he ok now? Can you tell us more about what his treatment entailed? Same thing happened to my neighbor's bulldog. I hear tx can be extremely rough.

He tested positivie in January treatment start right away. First; 2 nights at the vet where they shave a small part of his back so they can put a big injection through. when I pick him up he had such a sad face. He couldnt run or get excited only go outside to go to the bathroom in a leash and back home.. He spend his days in a the crate (he was not a crate dog) When I got home from work we stayed in my bedroom so he didnt run (he love to run around our Livingroom). 4 weeks later; 1 night at the vet where they shave the other side of the the for second treatmet, same deal no running no excitement.. 4 weeks; another 2 nights for the last part of the treatment.. The whole process start at the end of January at the end of March they let us start having some "fun" but we didnt get the complety "clean up" OK until the end of April.. Thankfully we stick to all the process and ROcco is doing great but some dogs cant handle the treatment.. For Rocco it meant for 3 months with no playdates, no doggy park, and we had to put his toys away and anything else that will get him too excited.
eta: that after all set and done we calculate around $800 in treatment cost

OMG that is so sad. It would break my heart to keep my dogs in a crate all day so they can't play and run and be free. OMG, it would crush me. My male dog would go ballistic. I am so glad your dog made it through.

Re: Spinoff to Heartworm post...no flames please
I grew up with dogs and we never did anything medical wise with them, so when we got a dog - i thought that the heartworm meds seemed excessive (and pricey) and wasnt gonna do it.....but my BIL talked me into it after explaning that it can be easy for them to get it (mosquitos can transmit) and that its not easily treatable and some dogs dont survive the treatment. (i believe its only a 50% chance of surviving) Not to mention how the treatment is.
So we decided to do it - and im so grateful. Since we got he, we know of a dog that got heartworm and its been over 6 months of treatments. So sad.

I don't really give in relgiously. Why? I had Dallas on the same squedual as my Nuva ring (It's once a month!) & since TTC & getting pregnant I have been forgetting because I stopped my own Nuva ring!
I don't really worry about it but I know maybe I should. I run with Dallas in areas common to other dogs.

But heartworm would come from a mostquito bite, which can happen even in your home.

Re: Spinoff to Heartworm post...no flames please
Our dog died at the age of 5 at the bottom of the staircase from heartworm. I was 11. He was greeting us coming home from school. Since then, my parents have always given our pets heartworm medication and I plan to do the same when I have dogs of my own.

I just don't get why anyone wouldn't give their dog Heartworm meds... it's a terrible disease yet totally preventable!
