Spinoff to height and weight percentages...
At birth Ryan was in the 90th percentile for both height and weight... (I think because he was born at 37 weeks...)
Every since then he's been in the 30th -40th percentile for weight...
And the 10-30th for height....
Now- For Ryans age is he is a litte under the avg weight... but for his height he's a chubb!
Everytime I go to the ped. I stress my concerns about him being on the short side, and my ped. just reassures me its no big deal, and every child hits a growth spurt at different stages, so the chart isnt the end all be all....
My question is... based on the chart percentiles how concerned should I be???
(Hes always gained the avg 2lbs a month (give or take) and now the avg, 1lb/month... and in height he's always grown... but the amount has been all over the place)

Re: Spinoff to height and weight percentages...
Our pediatrician told us that they look for consistency - if your baby is always in the 25% and then hits 90%, or vice versa, then they become concerned. If your baby has always been small or always big, that's fine. They also look at the parents as far as size (my DS seems to take after my DH, who is tall and thin). And as long as he's healthy, that's what matters.

Re: Spinoff to height and weight percentages...
Yes... my ped. tells me the same (about the consistency)
what I find odd is... No one... and I mean no one is short on either side of the family... Im avg. my mom dad and brothers are all tall, and DH and his family are also real tall...

Charts are meant more for peds just to make sure there isn't any large fall or jump from visit to visit. Most kids even do fall once they begin crawling/walking.
If it makes you feel any better, there isn't any strong history of people being tall in our families, yet, both of our children are always 90 - 100 percent in height.
Percentiles are still no absolute. I was always on the taller side in middle school but then I stopped growing while others grew taller. Just depends.

Re: Spinoff to height and weight percentages...
My pediatrician said that the percentiles that they're in don't necessarily mean much for adulthood. Eventually the large weight increases over the first several months slow down and the babies tend toward their genetic weight and height disposition.
Having said all that, Katherine also started out in the 90th percentiles and now, at 7 mos., is closer to 50%.
I wouldn't be too concerned if your doctor isn't.

Re: Spinoff to height and weight percentages...
I dont even have a clue as to what percentiles mean. My ped tells me every visit what percentile he's in, and i'm like, "That means nothing to me, is he where he should be?" And he says, "yes"... Thanks thats all i need to know.
