Spinoff to hitting at daycare...
So in my other post, I mentioned the little hell raiser in Riley's class. Keep in mind, this is a toddler class.
Anytime I've seen him hit, knock down a child, they just take him away and talk to him and tell him it's not nice. Then have him hug them to apologize.
This kid's behavior is chronic. He finds it all funny, everything he does that's bad, is all good times to him.
I think I've heard that daycares don't do time outs - why is that? Why is that such a bad thing? This boy is in daycare 6:30am-6:30pm every day, this is where he spends the majority of his time every week. How else is he gonna learn when this is where he's getting most of his experience?
Can anyone explain why they don't do time-outs? How does your daycare center handle discipline?

Our day care doesn't do time out. I was told it has something to do with the negative stigma of it.
I don't get it-my philosophy is that if a kid hit, a time out to think about it is good.
Our day care does redirect as well. And, they address with parents. Hopefully yours is doing this too? I would hope those parents are aware and that they are all working on it.

Ours does the same, and no time outs. But I honestly don't find they work so well with DS--he really needs to be put in a room by himself, and that wouldn't be possible at daycare.
Ours redirects and separates the children, they do tell him hitting or pinching or whatever he did is not good, hurts, etc. and they talk to the parents.

Re: Spinoff to hitting at daycare...
DS was bit 1-2 times - they put the bitter in quiet time w/ the aid who explained to them what was wrong - but it was more "caring" then "punishment". I guess it could be considered "embarrasing" to a kid if he was in TO and the other kids were around. Does your school have a "repeat offender" policy?

At my daycare I have seen them put a child in one of the chairs they eat in for a "timeout"-they explained to him what he did wrong and he had to sit there for a little bit-but he had a book to look at.

My son's daycare disciplines exactly as you described it and they do not do time outs. I don't understand it either.

Re: Spinoff to hitting at daycare...
DD's daycare in the toddler room had the "Time to think about it" chair. I remember walking in once and one of the children was sitting in it. I asked if DD every had to sit there.
I don't know what the other rooms do. That was the only time I had ever heard of it and she has been at the daycare for almost 3 years.
