Spinoff to holiday wish list...

For your DH's gifts to you for the holidays, do you let him pick out his own gift to you, or do you tell him what you want?

If there is something I really want I tell him. He appreciates it and it just makes it easier all around.

I told DH what I want for Christmas, and my 30th birthday, because I doubt he would think of it on his own.

Christmas: waterproof casing for my digital camera, because...

Birthday: We are taking a trip to an all inclusive!! I want either Mexico or the Dominican Republic. We will probably book for March or April even though my bday is the end of Jan, since we hope to move after I graduate and we'll both be starting new jobs.

I usually will give him a list and let him pick out what he wants from it..

I usually get stuff on my own for DW. I actually listen to her during the year, and keep mental notes on things she mentions. I often surprise her (in a good way) when I get her something she wanted, but forgot she even mentioned....

We ask each other for ideas or a list so that we each have ideas. My bday is Christmas Day and his is the day after New Year's so we need to shop for bday gifts and Christmas gifts at the same time.

DH will usually buy me something from my list, and will sometimes get me a couple of other small things too that he liked for me.

I usually try to get him something on his list and then always do some "practical" things too, it's kind of a joke now.

Up until I met DH I never made a wish list for the holidays. Whatever I got was ok. Well fast forward to DH and him and his family have always made lists. So now I'm forced to make a list and I struggle every year trying to think of things and then kind of disappointed when I know everything I'm getting. I've tried to go the route of telling him to surprise me but he gets annoyed.

My mom used to put stuff on layaway then tell my dad... If you don't know what to get me for X I have stuff on lay away at Y.

I took the theory into the technology era:
I used to send my ex-H emails,
Dear Wife
"Happy Holiday"
Love Husband

with the link to whatever I wanted - sometimes I gave him choices. He'd click on the link and 3-5 days later something would show up at the house.

He requires me to give him ideas. He usually dos a mix of his own ideas & things I've told him.
