When we got my engagement ring our jeweler said we should get it done every 2-3 years for insurance purposes since the value changes.
That was in 2001 and we still haven't gotten a new one.

Every two years as required by my jewelery insurance. But not as detailed as the initial appraisal. this is more of a "keeping up with market value" adjustment.
I also would always have my ring appraised if I had left it somewhere to make sure I got back what I gave.
