Spinoff to plastic surgery: Breast reduction
Those that have had this procedure: Was it covered by your insurance or did you have to pay out of pocket? If so, would you mind sharing how much this procedure cost?

Re: Spinoff to plastic surgery: Breast reduction
I was going to have the procedure done about 8 years ago. I had Oxford and they were covering 100% of the procedure. I can't recall the cost, not that it would matter b/c of how long ago it was.
I ended up canceling the week prior to my surgery.

Re: Spinoff to plastic surgery: Breast reduction
I had it done in 1996. Was one of the best decisions I ever made. It changed how I felt about my body and I ended up losing some weight because I loved my new breasts.
I had some back issues and it was covered 99.9% by insurance. If it was out of pocket it would have cost $13K but I'm sure if I didn't have insurance coverage the doctor and I would have struck a deal.
My doc has a surgical suite that he runs and that's cheaper. I had it done at North Shore outpatient. I went back to work in 4 days.
Please let me know if I can answer any other questions.

Re: Spinoff to plastic surgery: Breast reduction
My BF just had it done a few months ago. She had to go to physical therapy for a year in order for her insurance to cover it. If she had to pay out of pocket it would have been something like $13,000. She is very happy with the results.

Re: Spinoff to plastic surgery: Breast reduction
I had a gf who went through the procedure 2x. She had them done, then after a few years had gained some weight and then lost it but her boobs remained large so she had it done again. Both times she it was worth but it was very painful for her and I'm not sure she can breastfeed, but that didn't bother her.

Wow 13K....I've been considering having a reduction for the longest time. I have back issues, but I'm not positive that it's related to my size. How do you prove something like that?

Re: Spinoff to plastic surgery: Breast reduction
My sister had it done a few years ago and she had to go thru a whole procedure of proving to the insurance company why she needed to have it done. They approved it, but it was quite a process.

I had to give the insurance company my chiropractor files, a letter from my family doc, my gyno and my chiropractor and ex-rays. It was worth doing though. Also, the surgeon submits pics of you (headless) so they can see how disproportionate you are.

Ah, okay. Thank you for answering! It definitely seems like it would be worth it.

Re: Spinoff to plastic surgery: Breast reduction
My insurance covered everything. I didn't have to do anything. My plastic surgeon dealt with the insurance company and didn't have any issues getting it approved. The doctor only asked me to loose about 20lbs before having the surgery. I was already on WW at the time, so I didn't have that far to go.
I had VERY large breasts and didn't need to have a nipple graft (complete removal and repositioning of nipple). I will admit that the first few days are the toughest. I can actually say that it was more painful than giving birth to a 10+lb baby vaginally. Thank GOD for pain pills! After the first few days, it was not that bad. I was out of work for 4 weeks.
I know some people who don't have kids yet are concerned about breastfeeding. I was able to pump with DS and hope to BF this baby. I didn't have great milk supply with DS, but from the research I've done they say with time supply issues can correct themselves.

Also, the doctor has to tell the insurance company how much he/sjhe is taking out. It has to be a minimum in order for it to be deemed medically necessary. So if you are looking to go down one cup size you better be a very tiny person if you get what I mean. I went from a 38DDD to a 36D. I came out a full C but eventually my body settled on a D with weight fluctuations. I'm a perky D though. I told my surgeon that as long as he is in business I will be perky!

Re: Spinoff to plastic surgery: Breast reduction
I want a reduction, but haven't been going to a chiropractor/physical therapist or anything, and when I called one surgeon's office they said that's a must with my insurance. Someday though, maybe after kids. I def want one.

Re: Spinoff to plastic surgery: Breast reduction
My mom just had a reduction about 2 weeks ago. It was 100% covered and suprisingly easy to get approval by her insurance company. So far it has been a breeze. She had a pain pump so she never really had pain. I think she might have taken one pain pill the first night just in case but never needed another. She is still swollen and obviously not fully healed, but she is really happy with the result so far.

Re: Spinoff to plastic surgery: Breast reduction
I am blessed as some would say...to me it's always been "the curse". I AM getting it done this summer. My cousin had it done last year and LOVES it..another women at work had it done 2 months ago and LOVES it...I am looking forward to and can't wait. I know my cousin had to go to a chiropracter before insurance covered it. My coworker was covered 100%. I will let you know what I get it done how it goes! FM me if you want the names of either
