Spinoff to starting cereal--- why would/did you wait until 6 months?
I thought my dr said something about 4 months... but I see that a lot of you said you would wait or did wait until 6 months... can I ask why? I like to be fully informed so any opinions or advice would be great!! Thanks!

Re: Spinoff to starting cereal--- why would/did you wait until 6 months?
I have been putting cereal in DS's bottles since he was 3 months and will be starting to spoon feed him cereal at 4 months (after his dr. appt next week). Than shortly after that we start veggies and fruits. Not sure why anyone waits. I guess some babies are content just with milk. Not my guy...he's a piggy!

Re: Spinoff to starting cereal--- why would/did you wait until 6 months?
I am choosing to wait because that's what the AAP and the WHO both recommend. Starting solids before 6 months can cause diabetes and food allergies later in life. There are also other reasons as well, here is a link for informational reading

Re: Spinoff to starting cereal--- why would/did you wait until 6 months?
I can tell you why I didn't- DS was 9lb 12oz. At three and a half months he began wanting to nurse every 2 1/2 hours. I had plenty of milk, but DS needed something heavier. He was well over 15lbs by then. I don't think you can generalize feeding info., not all babies are the same. What's right for one is completely wrong for another. We do not have a history of allergies and I never worried about it. It would be ignorant for a parent to say "this is how it should be done, and if you don't do it this way, you're wrong and could be hurting your baby."

I was told to start her early because of her formula eating habits. I would ask your Dr. I wouldn't have started her if my peds didn't tell me to.

My ped says 6 months as well.... but I am hoping to persuade him this month at her 5 month check up. I would just prefer to do it before I go back to work. But if he says wait, i will wait.

Regardless of a baby's weight, they still all have an open gut until around 6 months of age.
I don't think I've seen any parent (including myself) say it's "wrong" to start earlier. It's just not advised by many different organizations that have researched the issue for years and that's why I plan to wait.
Everyone has to do what they think is right

I know this is what the "experts" say, but I think each baby is different and requires different things. We were all fed cereal and fruits way before 6 mo, I think I started at 1 mo. my mother told me which is what doctors recommended years ago. I am not obese, do not have diabetes and NOONE in my family has any food allergies. The dr's have to go along with what the "experts" say for obvious reasons but the experts are not always right. The standards and what we should and shouldnt do is constantly changing. Again, you need to do what is best for your baby.

Re: Spinoff to starting cereal--- why would/did you wait until 6 months?
Simply because I was in no rush. The ped. recommended waiting until 6 months too. DD was growing very well (in the 95th percentile), she BF very well, so she certainly did not need cereal early. If she was underweight I would've have done differently.

We waited until 5 months and for the first few weeks, she didn't get it everyday. We were in no rush.

Re: Spinoff to starting cereal--- why would/did you wait until 6 months?
I wanted to wait for the reasons stated above, however DD was drinking 42 - 49 oz a day and waking during the night to eat. My ped suggested starting at 4 months in her case.
The food definitely slowed down her formula intake.

Ds has been taking cereal since he's been 2 weeks... not alot-- always on a spoon, and his pediatricians advised it.

http://kellymom.com/nutrition/solids/delay-solids.html same here and ped did not want to start before then too.
I know many of you are saying "we" did it when we were younger but the environment and we have changed.
our mothers hardly ate fast food, the air was cleaner, had less stress for the most part etc., so you cant compare 20 plus years ago to now.
its a personal decision but everyone should know the facts and the fact is the digestive tract and enzymes needed to digest foods are NOT fully developed until 6 months of age.
