Without hesitation I would move to San Diego. I love it there and even though I've only been there once, it just feels like home to me.
ME TOO After a week there, I didn't want to come back to NY. I've visited lots of cities & never felt that way about anywhere else. I'm constantly talking about moving there. I don't know if we ever will, I think we'd need to save up a lot of $$$ beforehand to be able to actually do it, but it's my dream.

Re: Spinoff to the cost of living on LI post
I would totally move out of state. DH will never make what he makes here though, so it's not in the cards until we retire. I always said if I never met DH I would have totally picked up and just moved. My brother is 25 and just did this 2 months ago, he drove down to Louisianna by himself, knew no one, now has a job, apt with roommates, friends etc... he's happy he did it

I have family in SD - even more expensive than LI! It's crazy expensive there...like insane!!!

Re: Spinoff to the cost of living on LI post
If I could move anywhere regardless of cost of living it would be San Diego. Like another PP said, I visited there and it just felt like home. But it is more expensive to live there than on LI and the job market is pretty terrible out there too.
If it were up to my DH we would move tomorrow. He can get a job making the same in NC and I am pretty sure I could too. But I don't want to move back to NC. I really don't want to leave NY because my family and friends are here. I grew up living in 4 different states and while I wouldn't trade that experience for anything I always wanted my children to grow up with their family living close by.
But I know that financially, it is probably the smarter move to leave LI. I am pretty sure that if we left LI my dad would come too.

Re: Spinoff to the cost of living on LI post
I would move to NJ in a heartbeat, although it wouldn't help the cost of living situation. It won't happen though because jobs in mine and DH's field are very hard to come by right now.

Re: Spinoff to the cost of living on LI post
If DH could keep the salary he makes here, we'd be going to Carolinas or FL. Also, the thing keeping us in NY is the schools. We need GREAT schools with great special ed programs and you really can't beat that here (in NY).
My sister moved to Cape Cod in 2010. That's another place I'd consider as well. What her and her now fiance' paid for their home is unreal. I don't think you can find that on LI.

We moved to VA three years ago. We love it!
We moved because DH got a great job offer that we could not refuse, and the new company offered a great relocation package.
We do have a much bigger house, and our mortgage and taxes are much lower. But the primary reason we like it so much is the overall better quality of life we have.
Instead of working FT, I am now able to be a SAHM to my two boys, ages 1 and 4 now. It is much less crowded and hectic, and the city is very family friendly, with tons of parks and things to do with the kids (usually cheap or free). DH works the same amount of hours, but his commute is 20 minutes door to door instead of an hour, so he gets more time with us.
It was hard to leave our friends and relatives. Luckily, my parents moved down here last year, and BIL and his family live 2 hours away. It is a 7 hour drive to NY, which is doable for holidays and important family events.
It was the right move for us, as a family. Financially, it is a lot less stressful. Not just the housing expenses, but insurance, gas, and many utilities are cheaper too. Even with losing my income, we are able to put a lot more into savings and travel more than we ever did when we lived up North.
Did your DH get the same salary or more to move?

Other than moving into the middle of Manhattan, no.
My family is here, my friends are here .....I'd rather pay an obscene amount of money for a small home full of friends and family than have a ginormous home that's empty except fo the ocassional visitor .........
I also can't imagine NOT living an hour away from one of the most amazing cities in the world - but that's also b/c I love it, and fully take advantage of it being so close .........

See..not everyone though who moves off LI is living in a ginormous home with only occasional visitors (i'm not saying you were directly this at anyone)..unless you meant that is how it would be for you if you moved?
Not everyone would be OK moving a few hours away from family. But what a lot of people don't realize, is that just because you may be a longer car ride away, doesn't mean that visits are few and far between.
A typical month for us is going to NJ or NY for a weekend, and usually having family here for a weekend. There are months when we see them ALL the time, and some months when the visits are less.
I don't know..I just feel like i constantly see the people I care about, and although it takes some time, you can really start making amazing friends where you settle down. I was very fortunate to have a great group of women around me and a few college friends in the area as well.
Don't get me wrong....If we could have a home in NY that we could afford without feeling sick over it we would consider it (although at this point i don't want to be back in NY which is VERY weird that i feel this way..).
But i see so so many families struggling so badly. 12K in taxes is just awful.
I don't care at all about the size of my home (i'm in a townhome actually) but to even be able to afford a tiny home on LI seems hard.
I don't know how so many families do it. I see more and more grandparents moving off NY to be closer to their children (Wherever it is their kids have settled). My mom talks about coming to MD too at some point, she doesn't know how she will live anymore
I do LOVE NYC and totally agree with you on that. there is NO city like it. I appreciate DC, but its not the same. Anytime i take the boys for a week to my moms, we hop on a train and i get my fill of NY for a while!! So I can see not ever wanting to leave. I just can't see being miserable and not being able to truly enjoy life because of money which IS the situation for some (not all).

Re: Spinoff to the cost of living on LI post
We moved to NC and don't regret it one bit. We pay $2,000 in taxes per year for a new house with 2.5 acres. DH and I make the same salaries as we did in NY (DH is in IT and I am a paralegal). I am scaling back to only working 2 days per week starting this summer so I can spend more time with my boys (they are 3). We could not have this in NY.
Of course we miss our families and wish we were closer. But for us, it was more important to be in a situation where I can work part-time (or not at all, if I choose) and stay home with the boys more......and still be able to save money every month, which we will be able to.

The salary they offered was 20% more than what he was making! So, even with losing my pay, we have much more left over after paying our bills. Also, the health and retirement benefits are better than what he had. They made an offer we could not refuse, especially given the economy and job market in 2009.

Re: Spinoff to the cost of living on LI post
We used to live in San Diego and plan to go back when we retire or the right opportunity comes up. We moved there after living in Manhattan, so we actually thought it was much cheaper! when we moved back to LI, there was a slight savings on LI, but not too much.
For those who want to go to AZ, I seriously suggest that you go from June-September. It is BRUTAL. My ILs are all there and I will not visit during these months. Although my niece compares AZ summers to NY winters. In winter we are inside b/c of the cold; in summer they are inside bc of the heat.
