Spinoff: What do you think should be taught/reinforced better in schools?

I think day to day financial skills like counting change are important.

I also think there should be classes about managing money, investments, balancing a checkbook. Many people (myself included, to a degree) are pretty ignorant about these things.

I also think schools should teach more about government and the political process. High School students should at least be able to pass a citizenship test, though I fear many would not.

Were you taught about investing and financial management?
This is the part I have no clue about.

We had all of those things in ( public) HS in the early 90s--not all mandatory though.

I took basic accoutnant ( elective) & thought it was very valuable--my brother conitued on with more of the business classes, and I believe some of them went into investing.
There was frequently a "stock market challenge."

US Government & Economics was the 12 grade required Social Studies class. The AP exam was only on Government, so my class spent more time on that. I'm a little sketchy on the economics still. Govenrment was thorough though-and we even ran a voter registration drive for juniors & seniors turning 18.

I don't teach or have children, so I don't know what is taught & not taught presently.

I took that in summer school! It was a voluntary option backin the day.

I was glad I had the opportunities back then .

I made sure I taught my DD's what they weren't offered in school.

Re: Spinoff: What do you think should be taught/reinforced better in schools?

We had one semester of econ and one semester of gov't. I didn't get much out of econ that could apply to my life honestly. We did play the stock market game (well, some did) but we weren't really taught much about investing in class. honestly the people in school who played were the ones who already knew from wealthy investor parents.

I think personal money management should be required as a junior or senior in HS - savings, investing, retirement planning, credit cards/debt, etc.

Behavior and responsibility for oneself are good starters! And as a parent I think I'm where it starts. As a teacher, that's where I reinforce.

Re: Spinoff: What do you think should be taught/reinforced better in schools?

I think the practical life skills, like money management, are great ideas. I feel like being in honors classes, they didn't bother teaching us this stuff so we had time for all the AP classes. I would have benefited from some good old home ec!

Now that I'm teaching graduate students, I truly believe that proper English writing skills really need to be stressed. It amazes me how many of my students really cannot write properly! I received homework assignments with sentence fragments, the wrong form of "there, their, they're," etc. Some of them were painful to read!

When I was in HS, my junior year English teacher beat us over the head with appropriate grammar and writing skills. It was annoying then, but I appreciate it so much now. It amazes me that there are students in graduate school who can barely put together a coherent sentence!

Re: Spinoff: What do you think should be taught/reinforced better in schools?

When I was in high school, uor senior year found us writing a comprehensive college level paper. It had multiple drafts, note cards and annotations. It was hardcore. For every three errors in grammar, spelling and punctuation, a student dropped a letter grade for the assignment.

THIS is when I get angry at people who say that because I went to college and graduate school, that I know how to write. Sorry, this is high school and this is where I got my standards - in a public high school. No spell or grammar check. No computers. We were on our own.

Over the past 4 or 5 years, I have had friends ask me to proofread papers for graduate school as well as entrance essays for graduate school programs. I was appalled when I saw first drafts and wondered how these people even qualified for a HS diploma. How they ever made it through an undergraduate program at an accredited college, Ill never know.

I know many well written and well spoken people who learned how to write from simply reading the New York Times. More people should try reading newspapers.

Im cranky

I write well. You may know know it from the message boards, since I often fire things off in fragments, but I do write well. I have won multiple awards and been paid to write.

I did NOT learn from school. I mean, I did, but primarily I learned from reading. People just need to read. You can memorize a nunch of grammar books, but you won't "get" it unless you understand it the way you learned language in the first place - by exposure.

I think people should not be allowed to pass high school unless they can write in proper English. I'm not talking about being anal over who vs. whom, but about the BASICS of writing.

I used to correct papers for friends in college and you would honestly think you were reading the writing of a third grader. And of course, Leslie, the best was the improper use of $5 words to try to sound more intelligent.

ETA: These people graduated college and STILL write like 3rd graders. That's the shame.

High schools offer classes in accounting and personal finance. They are elective courses and many of the students choose to take them.

As for the government and political process, students take a year of US History and government and economics and government.

Many high school students could pass a citizenship test, however, I am pretty sure that many adults would not be able to pass such a test.

As for things taught in HS, due to NCLB (No child left behind) many students have to take certain courses and exams in order to graduate HS. The graduation requirements are tougher than they were when many of us were in hs.

Well maybe this was the problem with my school. It had very high graduation requirements and the focus was on AP classes. You could also take robotics, jewelry making, metaphysics and advanced research physics, but to my knowledge there were no personal finance or "home ec" classes to my knowledge. We also had less time for electives since we were required to take four years of science and a year of drafting in addition to 5 nad 10 period shop.

When I was in HS, they beat us over the heads about what our college professors would expect of us and they treated us like we were in college (I was in AP classes). Yeah, NOTHING like it!

I agree with PP about finances, investing, etc, as well as resume writing and job interview skills. It's important for kids to learn the importance of their credit score and how one mistake can really hurt you. I wish they would teach better sex ed as well.

We have plenty of AP courses and college level course in my high school as well. Many courses are starting earlier like in middle school so the students have more room in their schedule for electives that are more practical.

I actually found high school more difficult than college. But I went to like insaniac HS, where a grade below 95 was tantamount to failure.

Oh, I completely agree. HS was torture for me because I was always trying so hard to keep my A's and make sure my teachers knew I was college material. College was a breeze after the tyrants I had as HS teachers.

I hope you're right about the HS students.

I read kids SAT essays all day and an alrming number of high achieving kids have no freaking clue.

Last week I had one kid write about how Martin Luther King Jr unfortunately did not accomplish his goal of abolishing slavery.

Does this kid think we still have slavery in the US? Did he think we had it in the 60's? Or does he think MLK is from the 1800's, what with all of the TV footage and all....

We also have one essay topic that for some reason prompts most kids to wrtie about the Great Gatsby and most of them miss the point of the book entirely and write about how Gatsy achieved his goals!

I've also read essays that said the same thing about the Glass Menagerie and Amanda's dreams for her family.

And it's a LOT of kids. We always wonder at the office if the schools are teaching it wrong!

Re: Spinoff: What do you think should be taught/reinforced better in schools?

Many kids today do not remember important events from one day to the next. Unless they constantly are reinforced about certain concept they will not remember them. Students read a book for over a month and don't remember what it was about. I chalk a lot of this up to the lack of attention spans and the fact that many kids do not read enough outside of school. Unless a teacher is doing tricks in front of the classroom, many times the students forget what they have learned so quickly. But if it was a song on their Ipod, they would remember it.

I wouldn't be so quick to fault the teachers.
