spinoff: what is your criteria for a "good" school district
buying a great house in a not so good school district got me thinking!
many of you mentioned that the school district has to meet your criteria, and i'd like to know what that would be

for me personally:
-graduation rate -advanced programs AND special ed programs -security & safety -well rounded sports & club programs -reputation (I really do think a district's reputation is a huge factor)

i have to agree w. this. Plus im a teacher in a very affluent and well respected district so i feel like i know what areas can and cant compete

I agree. I like your list becuase you give the full picture of the district - not just one factor.
I wouldn't only go by statistics though. I know a family that bought in an area solely because it was a 2% higher graduation rate than a neighboring district. I repeatedly said I would consider it a bad area (having grown up in the neighboring area). Sure enough it's now gang terroritory and their rate has dropped.
Also like any school - even "good" districts have their own set of challenges.

Couldn't agree more! and reputation is a huge factor...schools just don't get a good/bad reputation for nothing lol! We went with the smaller house in the more desired area and the reason it is so desirable is because of the great school district Also, from a real estate stand point houses in great s.d's hold their value
