Spinoff: What makes a good driver?
What, in your opinion, makes you or anyone else a good driver?
What specifically do you do that is better than other drivers?
Curious.

Knowing the difference between driving defensive opposed to offensive.

Re: Spinoff: What makes a good driver?
having an overall view of everything happening on the road. Anticipating things ahead, keeping up with traffic, concentrating on nothing but the road.
Just a few..

Re: Spinoff: What makes a good driver?
Something I do, and I taught my husband to do (I taught him how to drive) is when you have people entering the roadway to the right, not to position your car right next to the people who might decide to change lanes to avoid the mergers.
Does that make sense, the way I explained it? So that if the people to your right decide they want to change into your lane, and don't look in their blind spot, you're still covered because you're not right next to them.

Re: Spinoff: What makes a good driver?
NOT making a left from the right lane, for one. Especiall if the left lane is NOT a turn only lane. (that was the one this morning).
NOT running red lights because you're in a rush.
Watching where you are going and not doing your make-up in the mirror.
NOT cutting people off when there is nowhere to go.
NOT running stop signs or trying to get around trucks that are making wide turns.
NOT trying to beat the LIRR crossing gate, forcing the train to go so slow it's practically in reverse.
To name a few...

yes..
not riding in the right lane when you know you are having people merging into your lane from the ramp.
I hate that.

Geez Susan. Summarized in one sentence, what I couldn't do in two paragraphs.
But, yes. Exactly.
I'm a freak about staying in my lane too. I hate seeing drifters. C'mon, is it REALLY that hard to stay between the lines?? If so, you should give someone else the wheel.

Come on, we are a team..I don't drift either..unless I'm on the phone, putting on makeup or drinking a hot beverage while texting.

Exactly! Prime example of a defensive driver.

Well, yeah of course. Priorities, ya know?
I used to drive an ambulance, and the way people respond to lights and sirens is scary.
For the benefit of anyone reading this, NYS law says that when you see an emergency vehicle approaching:
Pull to the right and STOP.
Yes, that's right, stop. How many people ever do? Instead, they keep time with the vehicle so they can swing in behind it and get through traffic.
