Spinoff: What's better - DVR or TiVO?
And....can you use the new HD tiVO on a non-HD TV? We are planning to upgrae our TV in the next few months.

I just looked on the Tivo site - and from reading the product details it looks like it would. It says it also supports basic non-hd cable. If you are really interested you should call; but here is the Link if you want to check out the details
Oh, and I voted TIVO in the poll. Tivo has some different features than the DVR (as someone said in another post) and I just REFUSE to give Cablevision another 10 dollars a month. I want to switch to Verizon, but with Cablevision's monopoly I'm stuck.

I have both and I have to say that Tivo is so much more user friendly than the DVR from Cablevision.
It's so much more work to find and record programs on the cablevision one and also I find the cablevision one is cheesy in terms of the on screen displays- they are very primative looking compared to tivo.

according to TIVO they have more features then DVR and I am going to regrett switching
but tivo annoys us- if we turned it off by accident- then it would take 10 minutes to power back up
and since I wanted DVR for both tvs - time warner DVR is cheaper

I don't know anything about the new Tivo, but I siwtched from Tivo to DVR because (1) we had an HDTV (2) it woudld record more than one thing at a time and (3) the box didn't cost anything extra. I have been pretty happy with DVR. I used to get so annoyed when the cable box was accidentally turned off and Tivo would record nothing.
But I did think Tivo was more fun. I liked the little noises and the descriptions of the shows was more accurate. Also DVR only schedules for a few days ahead and with Tivo you could schedule for weeks.
ETA: WOAH  The new tivo with DVR's features are $800!!!!!!

we have both- an old tivo and a dvr for the high def tv
tivo is much easier to find shows and adjust recording times - but can only record one show at a time
the new tivo can record 2 shows at once - renting cards is cheaper then a cable box- but can't use on demand then
the best is some companies are licensing from Tivo -comcast - so dvr is rented through cable company has tivo on it
dvr is hard to use sometimes -has terrible descriptions records things over and over again but can record 2 shows at once and have on demand
