My mom would give us money when the PTA would set up a "store" in the multi purpose room. My dad always got one of those little screwdriver sets or a flashlight and my a horrible cheap necklace or decoration for the house that she'd tell me she loved. She still has it all.

Re: Spinoff...how did you "buy" gifts for your family as a child?
when I was little, we were pretty poor. not much money.
my mom has 5 kids, but my sister and I have a different biological father.
every Christmas Eve we would spend it with my grandparents from his side of the family...my aunts, cousins. etc. my mom could only give us money to buy for them (not for her or my dad)...she wouldn't let us go there without a little something..and my grandparents were wonderful.
as part of our gifts, someone would always give us money..maybe $10 each.
on Christmas day my sister and I would take our money...our gifts and go down to 5th ave where there were 2 or 3 cheapie thrift stores open...back when you hardly saw ANYTHING open!
we'd go really early and buy little trinkets...whatever was nice and was inexpensive enough to enable us to get for my parents, and little brother.
it's just stuff like dinner bells, statues, gloves etc...just something b/c we knew that no matter what, our parents sacrificed to give us something too...and they didn't have much under the tree in return.
by the time my two other siblings came, I was already working and had money for "real" gifts...but my mom saved those terrible gifts for years.

Same here - except that our PTA set up more of a craft fair. There were a lot of handmade ornaments and crafts that were inexpensive.

So did we. I was a pretty good "saver" and used to forgo the ice cream/pretzels on sale at school for the last few months before Christmas. I had a big family to buy for, even when the gifts were super cheap

I also would buy strange things at the PTA Holiday Fair. My dad had a lot of paperweights. . .
I didn't get an allowance, so my mother would give my money for this--so I was using their money to buy them stuff they didn't need, but it amused them.

we would save our money all year for Christmas (ie allowence, which I started getting at 4 years old (it was $5 per week for cleaning around the house).
then a couple weeks before Christmas my parents would take all of us to Cheap Jones to buy our entire family gifts. We always got for my cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents, siblings & my parents. It made us really appreciate things you know. This way it was like my parents bought gifts from us to give others. It meant more to the family too.

What a nice memory, Jes. I remember getting money for the craft fair at school, and buying gifts there. Or giving things we made in art class.

This is what I did. I also saved up allowance money to buy my mom a special gift.
