Spinoff...Would you have your SIL in the delivery room with you if she was a Doula?
Would you have your SIL in the delivery room with you if she was a Doula?
This is a tough one for me. I know she wants to be in there, but I kinda want just me and my DH in the delivery room. However, the thought of a doula sounds great to me. I am confused. What would you do? TIA

I am having my SIL in the delievery room and she even isn't a Doula. But she is a NICU Nurse and I feel comfortable having her by my side. She is so comforting and soft spoken, I look forward to her support. God knows my DH is going to be passed out on the floor

Doula is an ancient Greek word which has come to mean "the woman who mothers the mother". A doula stays with a loboring woman throughout her entire labor and birth experience. Helping her to cope and manage in this major life event. She will provide emotional support, helps you in your breathing techniques and helps you to communicate your needs to the health care team.

I guess it would have to depend on my relationship w/ my SIL. Doulas are a wonderful support for you & DH, so I would strongly consider it.

My SIL is a nurse also, she is going to be the only other person besides DH allowed in room. She is very comforting and has an awesome bedside manner.

Re: Spinoff...Would you have your SIL in the delivery room with you if she was a Doula?
I wish my SIL was in the delivery room with us, i asked her to be there for my 2nd child's birth and we pulled her out of bed at 1am to join us, but the nurses in l&d at the last minute wouldn't allow her in. I think it depends on your relationship w/your SIL, my SIL is like my own blood, I love her to death so I wanted her w/ me (almost as much as I wanted my hubby there!)
BTW- she is not a doula, i just think she is very calming and organized so i thought it would be beneficial for me.

Dina- maybe make your decision as you get closer to your due date. See how you feel then....would it be awkward if you decided on a different duola? On the other hand, knowing her might make you feel MORE comforted. See how you feel in a month.....

Re: Spinoff...Would you have your SIL in the delivery room with you if she was a Doula?
That's alittle too close for comfort for me.
I love my SILs but i don't want them to be in the room with me when i delivery my baby - even if they were doulas.
It depends on your relationship with them - for me it would be a bit much.
My husband and doctors is all the support i need.

If my SIL was a doula and I had a good relationship with her I would totally use her as my doula and have her in the room.
I loved having a doula, can't say that enough!!

Re: Spinoff...Would you have your SIL in the delivery room with you if she was a Doula?
my SIL asked if she could be there (she's not a doula though) and I agreed...when the time comes, if I'm uncomfortable with her there, then my doula will handle it. I'd like to have a special bond with her

Re: Spinoff...Would you have your SIL in the delivery room with you if she was a Doula?
I would say, if you wanted a doula in the first place, and you are comfortable with your SIL do it!! If you never wanted a doula - then skip it.
Personally, I would want a doula- especially one I didn't have to pay. (The $1000 for one day sounds a bit much to me).
When my sister delivered they wanted to induce her wihtout checking out how dialated she was. The doula insisted that they check on her, and she was 8 cm dilated! They would have induced her had it not been for the doula. So there is definitely a benefit to having someone trained who will be advocating on your behalf.

I would , my FSIL was in the room with me when i had my daughter, I relocated and had no family and friends here on LI so it was nice, besides TRUST me when it comes time to push you dont care who is in that room, your focus is elsewhere

Thanks Ariella! We are visiting her in Hawaii in January. After the trip, I'll decide. I am really torn about this. If I choose another doula, I know she would feel slighted. I love my SIL, and I would love to have a doula but there is this part of me that just wants my DH in there. I will decide as I get closer to the due date.
Thanks for the advice ladies!
