Re: split pea soup recipe?
i use this one for split pea soup!
1 pound leftover ham bone with meat attached 1 cup chopped onions 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper 1 pound dried split peas 1 cup chopped carrots
Place the ham bone in a large pot over high heat. Add water to cover, bring to a boil, reduce heat to low and let simmer overnight. Allow to cool and clean the stock, discarding the bone, excess fat, and any cartilage. Return any good ham meat to the pot and bring back to a boil. Add the onion, garlic and ground black pepper and allow to simmer for 1 hour. Then pour in the split peas and the carrots and allow to simmer for at least 1 more hour to allow the peas to break down. Stir together well and season to taste.

thanks this looks really easy. I have a question. What can I do if I don't have a ham bone?

Make ham for dinner one night during the week and freeze the bone until you're ready to use it. 2 guarenteed good night's of eating!!!

this is going to sound really dumb but I'm jewish and we don't really do ham, I'm a rebel. Can I buy the boiled ham from the butcher and cube that myself?

Re: split pea soup recipe?
here's the recipe:
Short ribs bone in or piece of chuck with bone.
One package of pea soup mix that comes with a packet of seasoning. (plastic package)
Add ½ cup of dried peas-also plastic package..you can use green or yellow or mix them
Fill pot with cold water ¾ full.
Put meat in, bring to boil. Skim the top of the water to remove residue from meat (fat) while boiling.
Add pea soup mix and dried peas, salt pepper and garlic powder to taste.
Add seasoning lightly as the seasoning packet has salt. As you cook it keep tasting for saltiness.
Cook on medium light until meat is soft.
Add croutons!
My dad likes to eat the meat with horseradish..
