SPOILERS Anyone watch Abducted in Plain Sight on Netflix?
I just finished it and CAN NOT believe what I just watched! Its a documentary about a girl that was abducted by a family friend in 70's. The abductor groomed the whole family.
From IMDb: The twisting, turning, stranger-than-fiction true story of the Brobergs, a naive, church-going Idaho family that fell under the spell of a sociopathic neighbor with designs on their twelve-year-old daughter.
15 mins in and I was screaming WTF to the tv!

Re: Anyone watch Abducted in Plain Sight on Netflix?
Yes OMG I watched it felt the same way!
But I hate how they described the parents as if they are victims!! They were NOT victims IMO. Maybe at first he was playing them, but by the end no way.
I can't get the story out of my head.

Re: Anyone watch Abducted in Plain Sight on Netflix?
I know things were different in the past but they made it seem like they had never heard of the idea of a child molester. Is that really possible to be that naive? This was the 70s, not the 1700s.....
The show was infuriating. They didn’t protect their child at all.
If they were so naive, “small town”, then why wouldn’t the trip to Mexico and marriage set off such alarm bells. I mean that should have been such a big deal, even just taking a trip like that....
I don’t believe people can be this naive.

Re: SPOILERS! Anyone watch Abducted in Plain Sight on Netflix?
I agree with everything mentioned above!
It took them FIVE DAYS to report her missing to the FBI! FIVE DAYS! And the FBI needed to convince them that he kidnapped her! They didn't want to believe it. And his wife knew what was happening. For her to ask them not to call the police. She absolutely knew! I was saying to my boyfriend. OK, so he doesn't bring her back from horseback riding right away. Not sure I would've jumped to kidnapping either. But I would've called the police because I at least would've thought they might have been in an accident. How these parents weren't charged with something is beyond me!
I don't know how those parents can live with themselves.

I can not believe what I just watched.
These parents were unbelievable. I can not understand why they let this continue.
It was the 70's. Just move! Change your phone number! Change your name so he couldn't get your new info... Its not like he could google you! WTF
The parents were downright neglectful. They should have been charged with something... Good grief

Re: Anyone watch Abducted in Plain Sight on Netflix?
So let me get this straight. He hit on the mother. And she liked it.
He takes the father for a ride and says his wife can't satisfy him sexually and can HE please give him some relief. And the FATHER jerks him off??
What??
Did I hear that incorrectly?
And then your 12 year old daughter disappears with this psycho and you don't think anything of it?
What kind of sickos were ALL of these people? They had to have mental problems, the whole lot of them.
And he admits it on camera all these years later.
Yeah, ok.
And then he tells them that part of his therapy (for being a pedophile mind you) is to spend some time alone with their daughters. And they are like- yeah, sounds reasonable. You can sleep in her bed a few nights a week.
People like this shouldn't be allowed to have kids.
I'm so disgusted with these animals.

RIGHT??? I told you! These people should've been charged with something!
He marries their 12 yr old and the only way he will bring her back is if they don't press charges. Yeah OK...my ass would've been on a plane to MX so fast. And they agree to it! Because they didn't want the homosexual affair to get out. The mother then has a full blown affair with him afterwards and says "it was an exciting time in my life". What the actual F*CK is with these people. How that daughter still had a relationship with her parents after all this is shocking to me.
Thankfully he killed himself. Although he should've done it earlier. F'ing monster.

Yes!!! Omg as a mother, especially a mother of a daughter, I was shaking watching it. Like your ONE job is to protect your children. They failed so miserably at that it made me sick

Finished it and again I ask, WTF These parents! How they can actually sit and talk about it so non nonchalantly. The father teared up only when he was talking about his marriage having issues. I can't help but think there is more to the story.

Re: SPOILERS Anyone watch Abducted in Plain Sight on Netflix?
So me and Dh's face for the rest of the show after the father said he jerked this guy off and when agreed for this man to lay with his daughter:
Ok yes times were different back then and people were naive and gullible. But come on, inappropriateness was not non-existent. Then you you sleep with this man after he kidnapped her. That family is seriously f#cked up in the head.

I JUST WATCHED THIS AND MY MIND IS BLOWN!!!!!! omg i feel like the horse is my head... I have a headache after watching that.
Her parents were so STUPID.
My main question is-- why did they not tell us what happened with B's wife Gail? What was her true involvement and knowledge? What happened to her through/after all of this? and his kids... were his own kids abused by him? I wanted more of that story...

YES TO ALL OF THIS!!! They were so out of touch and just smaller than small town stupidity. THE FBI told them NO CONTACT. and then they continue to involve him in their and Jan's lives. Jan's mom still seems obsessed with B honestly.

Oh definitely. I believe Jan said something to that effect at the end of the documentary.

I wondered the same thing after it was over. Where do they stand on all of this? I haven't been able to find anything on them and their reaction to what happened or the documentary. I saw his obituary and it mentioned he was survived by the wife and kids. So she must have stayed married to him.
ETS: Looks like they removed the comment/memorial section on the obituary. When I found it the day I watched the documentary people were leaving messages letting them know how they felt. They are all removed along with the message section.

Re: SPOILERS Anyone watch Abducted in Plain Sight on Netflix?
WTF did I just watch?!?! I feel dumber after having watched that. This family is so beyond stupid and bizarre. They let him take her horse back riding and after they hadn't returned they didn't want to call the cops until 2 days later?? They knowingly let a grown ass man sleep in their 12 year old daughter's bed as part of his "therapy" after he had abducted her and after he married her (supposedly) in Mexico and the FBI told them to go no contact with this monster?? And after told no contact they dropped all charges because he and his wife blackmailed them about their sexual encounters with him. The mother continued to sleep with him for months after he abducted their daughter? They didn't want to get the police involved after he abducted her the second time. They didn't think they wanted to bother anyone. They finally let the cops know after 2 weeks. They let this guy build her a bedroom so she didn't have to share a room with her sister? Why were they giving this creep so much access to their family? Why did the mother allow the daughter to go work for him for the Summer after he had abducted her.
So many questions... I feel like there's more to this story, more to the parents' involvment. How they were so hesitant to involve police... How completely unaffected they seemed to the whole story apart from their infidelities... How is anybody that naive? Ugh and how bizarre was that alien story line?
I also wondered what happened to the wife and kids. No metion of them.

I'm so baffled by it all. So many pieces are missing from the puzzle. The way both parents are still able to smile while talking about the whole thing is almost creepy.

Re: SPOILERS Anyone watch Abducted in Plain Sight on Netflix?
Just finished watching this. I think they were all brainwashed. To me B was this master manipulator.
Didn’t the FBI guy even say back then child molesters were not a big thing so I guess it’s no too shocking the parents didn’t think of it.
Do I think they were stupid sure but do I think if this was tried on them today would it have gotten as far probably not or I would hope not.
They really didn’t bring B wife or kids much into it my thought is they probably didn’t want to be involved. His wife was I would think was brainwashed by him too.

He said that he didn't know what the term pedophile meant, which I also found bizarre being that he was in law enforcement and predators have been around since the beginning of time, but I guess it wasn't as common or he had never come across it in his early career. He was probably pretty young at that time too so didn't have much experience yet.
Maybe I'm jaded because of the times we're in, but I just don't get how even back then they could be so naive that they would think it was appropriate for an adult man in his 40s to spend so much time with a little girl. I think their involvement in the LDS church might have lowered their defenses, coupled with the creep brainwashing them. They all seemed enamored by him.

I think their religion had a huge thing to do with it. But the scary thing is- after all of this... They STILL seem enamored by him. The mother was smiling about it!! and she said to this day the 8 months she spent off with him (AFTER her child was abducted by him) it was still the most exciting time in her life.... um what?!?

But he MARRIED her in Mexico. They had to annul it. I mean.... and then they let him sleep in her bed for "therapy" after the police/fbi warned them DON'T HAVE CONTACT hes manipulative.... That is stupidity...

OMG yes I was floored when she said that! In present day, 30 something years after the fact, the mom spoke so fondly of her 8 month long affair with the man who had kidnapped and sexually abused her young daughter, and the affair took place both before and after he kidnapped the girl! She called it the most exciting time in her life. She is a sick woman I'm fuking sorry! Brainwashed or not! Sick for her to say that on camera after everything that child endured! She and her husband did nothing to protect their child.

Oh and when the creep tells the parents he needs to sleep in their daughter's bed as part of his therapy AFTER he already had kidnapped her and they had to get her back from Mexico and told them they could call his doctor if they wanted to check the validity and the fuking dad was like "no it's cool, no need for us to call, we trust you, sounds totally believable so have at her"!!!!!!! WTF!!!!!!!
