SPR: Food shopping before delivery?
DH and I usually go food shopping a couple of times per week to buy food for dinner, etc. I was thinking this morning it might be a good idea to make a bigger shopping trip and to buy things it will be easy for DH to make for lunch, dinner, etc while I'm in the hospital and then when we first come home. Is this a dumb idea or did anyone else do this too? I'm trying to make things easier on DH since I know how much he's going to have to take care of since I won't be able to help out much at first.

Thats a great idea- I've already made some cassaroles and pans of lasagna that are now divided and frozen in the freezer. Oh yeah, and the menus to ALL the take-out places in a 5 mile radius.
I don't want to THINK about cooking after she gets here.

Re: SPR: Food shopping before delivery?
Thats a good idea...either that or you can make things ahead of time and freeze them, this way all he has to do is warm them up.
OR, you can use my devious plan...get MIL to prepare lots of food for DH and I in advance!! But my MIL would love that!

Re: SPR: Food shopping before delivery?
I also plan on doing shopping before delivery. I hope to freeze at least a week's worth of meals (we don't have a very large freezer) ahead of time. I'm thinking the expirable items (bread, milk and juice) DH can handle the day before we come home from the hospital.

we went to BJ's yesterday and got a lot of meat so I could freeze it for cooking later... but thats what we usually do anyways, good thing my DH likes to cook because thats what he will be doing a lot when the baby comes

Re: SPR: Food shopping before delivery?
DH always does the grosseries so I know he can handle it.
BUT, I do plan to make a few meals and freeze them so we don't have to worry on the first hectics days when we come back from the hospital.

Re: SPR: Food shopping before delivery?
Thanks ladies! I didn't even think about whether or not my MIL would make some meals for us. Knowing her, she's already planning them out! I thought of freezing some meals but, to be honest, I'm not much of a cook and we don't have a big freezer at all. I think we'll pick up some extra things when we go to Costco today and that way we have things to BBQ, etc. Thanks again ladies!

I think that's a good idea and was going to do that but I know that my family plans on ordering a ton of food for me for when I get home so I'm sure I'll have those to eat for awhile.

Re: SPR: Food shopping before delivery?
DH just went yesterday and did a BIG shopping so we will only have to pick up smaller stuff as we run out like eggs, milk, etc

Re: SPR: Food shopping before delivery?
stocking up is ALWAYS A good idea! I've got half a batch of sauce in the freezer for pasta, tons of frozen veggies, paper goods.
I always cook to have meals in the freezer anyways since I have a toddler already.
Chili, meatballs, meatloaf, mac n cheese, sauce, the crockpot chicken that was posted on Recipes by scarletbegonia are all things we almost always have in the freezer!

Re: SPR: Food shopping before delivery?
Having food prepared that you can make quick or heat up is great. My mom went to TOWN and made so much food for us, it was great. DH was with me morning noon night while I was in the hospital and did not eat at home much, but it was great when I got home and didn't have to cook for a long time!

Re: SPR: Food shopping before delivery?
I froze some food, but I also have been trying to stock up on frozen easy to make foods - like frozen pizza and frozen waffles - at least then I know DH will eat something when I'm in the hospital...LOL

Re: SPR: Food shopping before delivery?
My DH is pretty capable but Im sure we will do a Costco run and pick up some quickies...or at least make sure we have a ton of kid friendly stuff for the older kids.
Knowing me Im going to be itching to get out after a few days..and to go food shopping will be the perfect excuse.

Re: SPR: Food shopping before delivery?
We did that, but honestly with all the trips back & forth to the hospital DH never had time to cook or eat at home...it was usually at the cafe in the hospital.
It was nice to have easy to cook meals once I arrived home though

Re: SPR: Food shopping before delivery?
We ended up doing our big food shopping today. We made sure we have all of the staples we need and some easy to make meals for when we get home from the hospital. We're all set now!
