STAR letter question.
We received our letter yesterday. It's in my maiden name. Does anyone know if I need to fill it out that way or can I use my married name since that is how my taxes are filed?
I've been on hold for 15 mins already with the help line waiting to talk to someone.
10/15/07 Update: I received my check today. I applied with my maiden name, since that is how my deed is and how I received the letter. So even though my SS# is in my married name, there weren't any issues.

Re: STAR letter question.
I'd be interested to know this too. I changed my name on everything but the deed/mortgage stuff, because the mortgage company wanted to charge me $100 to do it! I would think it's okay to file using whatever name is on the letter, since they use your ssn.

Re: STAR letter question.
I used my maiden name bc that's what's on the deed and the mortgage payments. I have been meaning to switch that though!

Re: STAR letter question.
You would have to go by I think what your "legal" name was in 2005. For me, I was not married at the time, so I am putting it in my maiden name

This is me, too. We bought our house in 2005 before we got married. I changed my name on everything BUT the deed and mortgage after we got married this year. I was going to just complete the application using my maiden name, but now I don't know...?

Well it depends. You need your ss# on the form. What is your SS# under? Your married name or you maiden. I asked specifically because I changed my name on my social. Your social needs to match you name.

Sounds like I need to call tomorrow and wait on hold again. I waited for 40 mins today.
This should be one of the frequently asked questions on their website

Re: STAR letter question.
If you send your marriage license, it will have your social security number on it. The number did not change even when you changed your name.

Re: STAR letter question.
Ok, I called when they first opened at 8am & got right in. Spoke with Amanda. This is what she said:
1) Resident property owner is anyone whose name is on the deed. As long as you were married & your SS# is in your married name as of 3/1/2007, you enter it that way.
2) If your name is not on the deed of the house, you put your name in the "spouse" section. Same applies like above: If you were married & living together as of 3/1/2007 at the residence on the application & your SS# is in your married name, you file it that way. If your SS# is still in your maiden name, you file under that.
No copy of your marriage license is required. Everything MUST match your current SS card.
Hope this helps!

Okay, so even though the deed is still under my maiden name, and my maiden name is what's on the letter, since my social is changed to my married name, I have to file using my married name. Right?

That is what they told me. She said look at the date on the top (March 1, 2007) she said what was your name as of that date. So I said my married name & that is my SS. She told me that YOU must go by your SS card name bc that is your LEGAL name
