Re: Startling Autism Study
I spoke with the Ped regarding this issue. He said there are not really "more" kids with autism, just more kids being labeled with it. If you remember when we were in school, there were the kids that were just "retarted" or "special ed". Now, all kids have a label and that's why it seems like more kids have autism. Also, the world population has increased, so naturally there will be more autistic kids, but the number of "normal" kids increases too!!!

Re: Startling Autism Study
Frightening numbers but I really don't think autism is increasing - I think they are just diagnosing more and more children with it. Whether it's because more children actually have it or because the spectrum of the disorder is so broad and continues to broaden - that is unknown.
But I do wish they would find a definitive cause already.

Yes, there are. The most important are poor eye contact, social delays, speech delays, and repetitive behavior. If anyone has any inkling whatsoever (mommy 6th sense), call EI and have your child evaluated right away (even if your pediatrician tells you otherwise because mommies know best).
In addition to EI, I would also recommend having the child evaluated by a pediatric neurologist or developmental pediatrician. The earlier the therapy is started, the better prognosis for the child.
My son was diagnosed as PDD-NOS (mild autism), has been receiving services since he was 19 months (now 28 months) and his progress is remarkable. Some of his therapists have insinuated that he no longer shows autistic signs and is just normal. I am not sure if he is ocnsidered "recovered" or was misdiagnosed, but I honestly don't care because his progress is directly linked to all the EI help he received.
