Staying home with the flu
About how many days do you need to stay home with the flu? My doctor told me yesterday that I cannot go back to school till Monday. If I am fever free with no meds for 24 hours should I be able to go back? They have me on tamiflu and a nebulizer. I do not want to get my students or the other teachers sick. If there is any chance to spread I will stay home. I'm starting to get my energy back and do not want to use all my sick days if I don't have to. I'm going to call the doctor tomorrow but I wanted to see what others have been told.
Thanks

Staying home with the flu
A few years ago when I had the flu, I missed a week and a half of work. Even if I wanted to go back, I had zero energy to even get out of bed. I guess every case is different, but I would listen to your body and don't push yourself too much bc the flu takes alot out of you and the recovery time is very long.
Feel better!!

Re: Staying home with the flu
How many days have you been sick? If you need a nebulizer you had to be pretty bad. I would think if you feel well enough to run around all day, are 100% fever free with no meds for a full 24 hours I would think you should be okay. Maybe they said Monday be people need a week to recoup if they were really sick.

Re: Staying home with the flu
At our Dr's office it says if you have been diagnosed with the flu you must stay home 5 days at a minimum to prevent it from spreading further. I wish people would follow.

Re: Staying home with the flu
my real answer is that you should stay home until you feel better. we're no good sick - not only are we less productive but we risk making others sick. that said, i think our society (NO offense to anyone - JMO) gets into our head that staying home is bad and therefore people go to work unwell. i find this is especially true for companies who don't give designated sick days.
i used to work for a british company and the mentality was totally different (in a good way.)

Re: Staying home with the flu
I started feeling sick Sunday and went to the doctor on Monday. The nebulizer was added because I have asthma and my lungs were very tight. I still feel weak but am feeling better every hour. No fever since 2pm. I have a really long commute so I would not want to push myself but I don't want to stay home all week if I don't need to.

Re: Staying home with the flu
Please stay home for the week, in particular since you are an asthmatic. Being an asthmatic puts you at very very high risk.

Staying home with the flu
I just had the flu a few weeks back for the first time in my life! After 2 days I was no where near feeling better or even able to contemplate about work. My Dr. wanted me home at least 5 days. I'd say you should not go to work this week.

Re: Staying home with the flu
You are contagious for 5-7 days from when you start feel sick. CDC guidelines
I looked this up today, b/c we have 3 people out with the flu & I think one came back too early.
It totally sucks though, b/c we only get 6 sick days, so if you could use most of the in only the 2nd week of the year.
And I imagine being a teacher is even worse, because it's not like you can work from home.

Re: Staying home with the flu
My son has it too. His dr. Said he is not contagious after 24 hours of being fever free. So far he hasn't had a fever sonce yesterday afternoon and he also started feeling sick on Sunday. I am not sending him today and tomorrow but maybe will on Friday(he still has a lingering cough). We are all on tamiflu and started it Monday night. I am very surprised I haven't gotten it with the amount he was coughing in my face Sunday and Monday. I am surprised I haven't gotten it.

Re: Staying home with the flu
I was out with the flu for 3 weeks 2 years ago. But I also ended up in the hospital 3 seperate times.
The avg. person doesn't get as sick as I do with the flu. I hear most people fighting it off in a week or so.

Staying home with the flu
Id stay home... you say you are still a little weak.. well that's at home with no major stress or priorities. Working (regardless of the job but especially with kids) will put more stress on you and tax your energy reserves. You need to rest and let your body do its thing and recover. I probably wouldn't stay home all week but that's me. I would NOT however go to work unless I could mill around unweaked for at least an hour if not more. Sitting on the couch is boring and dull but honestly you ARE working out just internally.
Stay home.
That goes for ALL sickness in my opinion.
