Stony Brook Midwives
I am looking to switch doctors and I heard great things about Stony Brook Midwives from 2 people. I figured I would ask on here to see if anyone else had any feedback.

Re: Stony Brook Midwives
I love them . They delivered DS and I had a wonderful drug-free experience (I have heard that they are also excellent for medicated births -- they support your decision either way.)
The only con is that there are 7 midwives in the practice, so it can be hard to develop a relationship with all of them (you never know who will end up delivering). They're also part of a larger Stony Brook practice and I didn't always find their front-office to be as on the ball as I would have liked. But I will definately use them for the next baby.

Love, them. They delivered all 3 of my kids and I have only great things to say about them. No matter who ends up attending to your delivery you will be in good hands. I had a different midwife for each of my 3 deliveries and they were wonderful.

Re: Stony Brook Midwives
I'm not using them, I went with another Midwifery practice because Stonybrook is just too far east for us, but I have heard nothing but great things about them.
I have a friend who used them twice and loved her experience. There was one midwife she wasn't thrilled with but overall was happy.

I used them, and overall it was a good experience. The wait was kind of long though, and I disliked one of the midwives.

Re: Stony Brook Midwives
My sister had one when she delivered. She absolutely loves them. I'm even thinking of changing.

Re: Stony Brook Midwives
I currently go to them now in the Islip Terrace office. I love them...I've met 4 of them so far and they are all great! As another poster said...the con is that there are 7-8 of them and anyone of them can deliver you and the office didn't have great hrs. The setauket office has better hrs though, but thats far for me. They also have the "meet the midwives nite" on the 1st Thurs of every month and you can meet all of them and ask questions. They give you a tour of the l&d also. My mom's last two kids (3 and 11)were also delivered by them and she had a wonderful experience. I would definately recommend them! Good Luck!

Re: Stony Brook Midwives
I too am using them. I changed to them in Oct so I only met two so far. I will meet another one tomorrow. I to wish there were only like 4 of them. Its a large practice so I would have felt better if I got to know each one better. Especially since my first two doc visits were with another practice. Its great to hear others feedback. I met a LIF user at Motherhood who used them and loved them. Also one of my friends recomended them- she goes there for reg Gyno visits

Re: Stony Brook Midwives
I used them and they were great!! I didn't see them all of them prior to giving birth since I had switched mid pregnancy and DD was born a month early. Jessica was there when I was in labor and then Careen delivered DD along with Vandy and they were wonderful. I had an epi and they fully supported my decision. You should attend the meet the midwives night at SB. It's nice to meet them all at once and you get a tour also.

Oh, oh -- Careen delivered DS -- I love her! She was so wonderful. She was the first one I met with and when she came in the morning of DS's birth, she said, "I wasn't surprised at all to hear you were here today [I was a week early]. I knew I was going to deliver your baby and I'm going on vacation tomorrow, so I'm glad he's coming today."
I love how supportive they are of both medicated and unmedicated birth.

Re: Stony Brook Midwives
Thanks for the feedback. I can't make it to the first thurs in Dec meeting so I am going to make an appointment to meet them. What happens if there are complications and you need a c-section (which I don't want, just wondering just inm case) - are they allowed to do them or do you know what dr.s they are affiliated with at SB?

Re: Stony Brook Midwives
They can't do C-sections, but they have OBs that back them up. I asked them what would happen if I became "high risk" during my pregnancy and they said I would have to be referred to their OB, but that they would continue to offer care in partner with the OB -- same thing if I needed a C-section -- an OB would have to do it, but they would be there.

The office they practice out of also has quite a few OB's so you need not worry. One of them will take care of you if you need a C-Section
