STTN at 6+ months WITHOUT sleep training
does anyone have a child that started to sleep through on their own at this point? or am i deluding myself that this will happen? DD #1 slept through on her own- but she started 6 hours at a month, and it got longer and longer, she kept dropping feeds. DS, on the other hand, is 5.5 months, and is still up every 2-3 hours. he goes to bed aroudn 7ish, i am only nursing him once- around 4/5 am. the other times, he gets a paci and goes back to sleep. ianyhow, do you think its possible?

Yes, at around 4 months, I upped the amount of formula he was getting during the day and stopped the nighttime bottle and he started sleeping through the night.
Not sure if that works with BFing. I also think babies all have their own timetable for this. Some will do it earlier than others, I think just based on their temperament and personality.

Re: STTN at 6+ months WITHOUT sleep training
DS is definitely improving (was 6 months 12/24). he now goes down at 8 and dropped the middle of the night bottle in the past month, and will wake up between 6 and 7AM (occasionally throughout the night for a pacifier). This was without sleep training. Last night he woke up at 3AM wide awake and i brought him into bed w/ us though. I just don't know what to do when he wakes up wide awake during the night.
ETA: since i am still up several times a night to give the d@mn pacifier, i shouldn't be giving advice.

I think that if he is sleeping from 7-4/5 and only waking occasionally for a paci, then your DS is STTN. My DS sleeps from 8:30-7:00 and wakes probably 1-2 times for his paci. I still consider that to be STTN. JMHO

ITA- my DS is 5 months old and every night is actually different. some times we don't hear from him between 7:30pm-5:30am other nights he gets up for his paci once or twice...some nights he wakes to eat around 4am then 6am the next ...always different. once we did drop the 12/1am feeding he did start waking less. now that i know he can make it w/o that i don't feed him til after 4am. he is EBF but has solids 2 or 3 times a day too. but i also think the paci although helpful can interfere with a completely solid night's sleep.

yeah that is not STTN if he is getting up that much. he's not a newborn obviously so he doesn't need to eat that much overnight. what do you think is waking him? how does he go down at night? do you rock him or anything else that he might wake up looking for?

Wow, that IS a lot! Is he sick or teething? My DS has a runny nose and he's teething at the same time, so he's def waking more than usual this week. I just keep telling myself he'll go back to his usual self soon.

i asked my doctor because i have the same issue. she said it will be difficult to CIO if he is used to the sucking...i don't know, i am just waiting until he can put it back in himself (he sometimes does during the day, but at night is too tired). until 10 months they sometimes need the sucking to self-soothe.

Re: STTN at 6+ months WITHOUT sleep training
yup so it's the paci-that evil thing! i say that b.c i have the same issue! had it with my DD and now with DS. with DD it was 100x worse. DS like i said has nights when he is looking for it a lot and others when not. i try teaching him during the day to put it in himself but not yet. he's getting it a little now. he has 7 in his crib within reach. to be honest...when i went back to work 2 weeks ago i started to put the monitor on low so that i didn't jump at the first and every night cry. so i know this sounds bad but i'm sure there were times he CIO without the paci. obviously not too bad b/c i would have heard him. i just cannot run up and down my stairs all night when i have to work, and take care of 2 kids on my own (DH out of house a lot). so i haven't done full on CIO like i had to do with DD but here and there i have with DS. i am thinking that him finding the paci on his own is right around the corner so until then i am just holding out! i think my DD could do it on her own around 7 months!

Re: STTN at 6+ months WITHOUT sleep training
Yes, my DD started STTN at around 4.5 months, from 8pm to anywhere from 3-6 am. We did no sleep training and I still nurse her to sleep for 20 minutes or so each night. However, I still can't put her to bed awake or drowsy and expect her to soothe herself to sleep. So this definitely presents an issue with naptime where she needs to be walked in the stroller, nursed, or rocked to sleep.

Lily did. She started STTN at about 6 weeks and has been ever since (2.5 years). She was able to teach herself how to self soothe all on her own.

Re: STTN at 6+ months WITHOUT sleep training
Yael is 5 months and pretty close to it, without any nightime CIO - she goes to sleep around 7/7:30 and wakes up once, for about 10 minutes, to nurse, around 3am and back down until 7/7:30am.
I follow the EASY method during the day - I never feed her to sleep, instead, when she wakes from a nap, that's when I feed her. Then we play for an hour or so, and within 2 hours of waking, I always have her back down for a nap. It's a pretty good routine that's been working for us for several months.
I think what helps the most is that I don't feed her to fall asleep - instead, I pay close attention to her sleep cues (rubbing eyes, yawning, staring into the distance, turning her head from toys), and I immediately put her in her crib for a nap, without any sleep aids. That way, she's learned how to self soothe herself to sleep. Once she really mastered self soothing for naps, her stretches at night got longer because when she wakes up, she's able to put herself back to sleep.
Also, the introduction of solids has really REALLY improved her sleep during the night

I am kind of doing the same thing here, but this method leads to lots of cat naps, and I'd love longer naps so I can get more done (I work from home a couple days a week). Any ideas on how to use EASY but stretch it to longer naps?

I'd say to just keep at it - in the beginning Yael catnapped a lot, but I stuck with the routine, and within a few weeks she started napping better. At this point, she takes about two 45 minute napes in the morning, and one hour and a half nap in the afternoon and then a little catnap in the evening before bedtime...
I also make sure to EXHAUST her when she's awake

Re: STTN at 6+ months WITHOUT sleep training
DD#1 Started to STTN around 6 months. She did it all on her own and she was EBF. She has STTN ever since and she is now 2.5 years.
STTN to me consists of when I put DC down for bed at night they do not wake until morning...10-12 hours

Re: STTN at 6+ months WITHOUT sleep training
I EBF DS. By 6 months old, he dropped down to waking once per night. Before that, he'd wake up 2-3 times per night. At 7 months old, he started STTN on his own.
