STTN = CIO

An earlier post on STTN got me thinking and it seems that most babies who were STTN by 6 months or earlier were CIO babies.

Am I wrong?

Re: STTN = CIO

Most peds. don't recommend starting CIO earlier than 6 months. Chat Icon

DS started consistently STTN at 7 months. We had a month or so stretch between months 2 and 3 when he STTN, but then he started feeding again during the night, and then there were a couple months where he needed the pacifier put in several times a night. Chat Icon Since month 7 it's been generally 10 hours a night, with the occasional teething/walking/standing up night interrupting.

We never did CIO, nor do we ever plan to. DS is 10 months next week.

No tips; I just felt CIO was not for us, and felt that DS needed to mature to a point where he learned to comfort himself and go a long stretch without feeding.

Re: STTN = CIO

My DD STTN by the time she was 9 weeks old. We did not CIO. Although I am not opposed to it (at the proper age of course).

I have no tips as I don't think anything you do at an early age helps the baby STTN. They will do it when they are ready to.

Nooooo

My ped recommended it at 5 months and it was too early.

We weren't successful with CIO until DS was 12 months old

Re: STTN = CIO

Both of my DDs started STTN between 6-8 weeks. I did not let them CIO. It was not necessary, nor would I let a baby CIO before 6 months.

Re: STTN = CIO

My DD STTN at 5 months and I didn't even attempt CIO until she was 11 months old for naps.

I think I've only let her CIO 2 or 3 times her whole life!

Re: STTN = CIO

DS started STTN at 8 weeks and then stopped at 4 months (coincided with the start of cereal). He didn't STTN again until about 9 or 10 months.

I really didn't have any tricks, we just followed his lead. I do think getting his initial bed routine down, helped with him getting up at night.

We went through a period when it was tough to get him to go to sleep. I had been nursing him to sleep and I had to be ever so careful to put him down without waking up or I'd have to start it all over again. It got pretty ridiculous, taking an hour+ to get him to sleep.

What we did was change up the routine, I nursed him downstairs and then brought him up stairs, put on his lotion, PJs and read to him and then put him in his crib awake. We would let him cry for 10 minutes and then go upstairs and soothe him (pat his back, rock him) We also used the FP aquarium (which he loves!). Sometime I hear it go on in the middle of the night when he wakes up and wants to go back to sleep. Within a week he has adjusted to the new routine and went down easily.

Now putting him down day or night is a dream!

Re: STTN = CIO

my dd STTN but I rocked her to bed until she was 1 year old

she went to sleep after rocking and slept all night, she USED to be an amazing sleeper, now, not so much

she CIO now at 3

With KJ, he is not MUCH of a crier but we do let him CIO....if he gets hysterical, I will get him and put him in his bouncy (he LOVES that thing and will fall asleep in it from time to time)

Re: STTN = CIO

My DS started STTN at 4 months (we didn't use CIO). We have a really consistent bedtime routine that we started when DS was about 6 weeks old. We don't make any changes to it. The last thing we do right before bed is a bottle. I started putting him down when he was sleepy but not asleep. I also found that around 3 months I started letting him fuss (just for a few minutes) when he woke up in the middle of the night and he learned to soothe himself back to sleep. He's been sleeping 10-11 hours since then.

Re: STTN = CIO

my dd's both slept through the night early...as they got bigger, all of a sudden the loss of binkies or just random rolling would wake them and it started to get lost....so we did cio then...

Re: STTN = CIO

DS was an amazing sleeper from Birth until 9 months old. We didnt do CIO during this period at all. If he cried I was up with him the minute I heard him.

From day 1 he slept 5-6 hours at night straight took a bottle and went back down.

He STTN at 7 weeks for about 9+ hours.

At 12 months we did CIO for the first time to get him out of a bad pattern of waking up!

ETA: DS was born at nearly 10lbs and was eating ALOT from day one. Even my ped said it was like he was "stocking up" so he wasnt hungry at night. Also and I honestly feel this just shows its his personality, when I was pregnant, I NEVER felt him at night and NEVER woke up due to kicking int he night. I think he just never had that Day night confusion so sttn came quick for him.

Re: STTN = CIO

My DS was not a CIO baby & prob never will be. Actually, my ped recommended that I do CIO for him(he's 10 weeks)

He pretty much decided on his own that he didn't need the night feedings. One night, he slept through his midnight feeding, then another night he missed his 2 am feeding & so on.

He sleeps well, not as well as some of the other babies i've read about (from 10pm - 5:30am) All I did was help him determine the difference between night & day.

Re: STTN = CIO

My son started sleeping about 5 hours at a time around 2-3 weeks. By about 5 or 6 weeks, he was up to 7 hours, and now at 12 weeks, he goes about 10 hours. Right from the beginning we had been swaddling him in the Kiddopotamus SwaddleMe. About a month ago, we got this AWESOME product called the Woombie, which added another 2 hours or so to his sleep time. Also, we have the white noise CD that came with the "Happiest Baby on the Block" DVD by Dr. Harvey Karp. Every night when we put him in his crib, we play the heartbeat sound (track 4) on repeat. I definitely think this contributes to his awesome sleep habits. Here's a link to the Woombie, it's the greatest thing ever and I highly recommend it!

Re: STTN = CIO

DS# 1 was STTN at 6 weeks.
DS# 2 was STTN at 9 weeks.
DD was STTN at 4 weeks.
I just swaddled them tight, put the white noise on, and put them in when they were ALMOST asleep.

I am not a CIO parent.

Re: STTN = CIO

We tried CIO, but at 8 months. I hated it, and it didn't seem to be working well for us, so we tweaked his sleep times and created a bedtime routine. It worked beautifully, CIO really wasn't needed.

Before that, DS slept through the night around 4 months with a couple brief spurts where he needed feedings again. I fed him for a few days, and then he was fine and STTN again.

I've always heard the earliest time to start CIO is 5-6 months.
