Student Loan Forgiveness- anyone do this????
Hello All,
I am currently looking into the student loan forgiveness. Has anyone done this? Can you share your experience?
I called a company called National student loan consolidation, 3126193547. I spoke with Andre Edward (Www.nationalstudentloanconsolidation.com) He told me that the whole process would take 60-90 days and 6 pp live in my household to qualify. They would require an attorney fee up front of $700. (I currently have a little less than $50k in loans). Once the process is completed I my student loans will cost between $20-40/ month 25 years loan no additional fees loans will be forgiven. This payment would be $260 or so less then what i currently pay, which sounds beneficial. however i am afraid that it could be a scam.
Any experience or advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you, Erica

You don't need to pay a fee. Go on line to see if you really qualify.

I would trust only your loan service provider to offer student loan forgiveness; I am highly skeptical of any third-party involvement. I've also seen a ton of student loan forgiveness scams on Facebook recently.

Call your lender and ask for income based repayment options or options for deferment/forebearance, consolidation etc. most of the "forgiveness" stuff is scams

There is a federal program but most people won't qualify.

I did it. I am a teacher. I had to meet a bunch of requirements. I did not need a lawyer.

This. I need to look into it for myself. My payments are affordable, but I keep hearing these rumblings that certain fields you can wipe the slate clean after a certain amount of time.
I'm skeptical too though and like a PP said, I don't trust that I'd even qualify.
Also I'm nervous if they combine both my and DH income the monthly payment will no longer be affordable.

How did you go about it? Is there a legit website to see if you meet the requirements?

Re: Student Loan Forgiveness- anyone do this????
Many years ago, I did have forgiveness on one of my federally funded loans. I was a teacher and worked with inner city populations and for each year of service, I think 20% of the loan was forgiven, up to a certain amount.
Call whoever manages your loan and ask them. This should all be information you can get for free.

I called my lender Sallie Mae, and they currently don't have any information regarding the 10% forgiveness program and they will notify me once its available. However they are offering the teachers program and disabilities program.
Thanks for all of your input.

Re: Student Loan Forgiveness- anyone do this????
Not sure if this might help, but I enrolled in auto-debit with Sallie Mae and in doing so they lowered my interest rate .25%, which I thought was pretty good!
It doesn't lower the monthly payment, but will have an impact over the life of the loan. Just a thought, I was pleasantly surprised!
