student observer VENT

we have one (i coteach), she is great with the kids but she is never there.

she is supposed to do 70 hours and i think she is done early November. I should have kept track of her hours and didnt but there is no way she will have 70.

I know what it is like to be an observer or to student teach and if she was short a few hours i would have no problem signing off on it, but not if she is short A LOT of hours Heck no.

Now she us supposed to be getting observed on Friday doing a lesson. 2 weeks ago we had her do a reading lesson and she didnt have the flow of it down and didnt really do a great job. She finally showed up on Friday of last week and we asked her if she wanted to do the reading lesson.. she says "no thats ok, you can do it" umm OKAY... so then later we asked her if she wanted to do the read aloud.. again she says no thats ok. WT heck, she has no idea what she is doing and she is getting observed.

This just annoys me because when it was me i was so paranoid about being late, missing a day, and would worry if I wasnt teaching enough.

I want to say something to her about the hours, but not sure what to say

Thanks for letting me vent.

Re: student observer VENT

i think you just need to be honest with her. you can say that you have noticed that she has been absent a lot and that you don't feel she is close to meeting her required hours. i would also mention that it is in her best interest to do read-alouds and teach where she can because you want her to get the experience she needs and to have the necessary practice and control she needs when she gets observed by her professor.

i was lucky that i always had great cooperating teachers....they gave me great compliments, but also the constructive criticism i needed. she may think she is doing a great job and needs to hear from you that she's really not.

Re: student observer VENT

thanks. I think im going to try and say something to her. We did ask her how many hours she needed - as a way of saying like hey.. you better be here but i think we need to be clearer with her now. thanks!

Re: student observer VENT

Don't you have to sign something verifying that she was there???

Re: student observer VENT

We do but i guess she is going to give it to us at the end instead of daily. Of course we didnt think to write down the days and times she was here.

I don't think that should be your responsibility. I'm student teaching right now, and when I was observing in a class I made sure to write down the days and times and how long I was there. I also made sure to help out in the classrooms and do what I could. ITA with the above posts, I think you need to voice your concerns to her, or even to whoever her observating professor is.

It's also great that you and your co-teacher are willing to let a student observer become involved in the classroom and as a student, she should take advantage of the learning experience.

Re: student observer VENT

even if you didnt keep track, dont you still need to sign off on her experience in the classroom.

I had a participant/observer 2 years ago and needed to complete a survey type paper about her performance so she would be eligible for student teaching next semester

Re: student observer VENT

When I was observing I had the teacher sign it every time I was there and for how long. It is the observer's responsibility to take care of their own hours.

Re: student observer VENT

if she is just an observer, why does she have to do lessons?

i agree that you need to lay it down with her. let her know what you'd like to see her do and what you expect. and if she doesn't do it, let her observer know

thanks ladies

a lot os schools now require students to observe but also get observed doing 1 or 2 lessons, usually small group. I know Hofstra does this.

Im def going to say something to her when i see her tomorrow (if she shows up!)

When I observed I was in more than one room. Is she only in your class?

Re: student observer VENT

she is supposed to go down the hall to another ctt room, but i was talking to those teachers today and they said she is never there either.

when she goes down there she says she is just going to go because its 1130 and she has to move her car, then never comes back.

Re: student observer VENT

sounds like she's being VERY irresponsible here. Not just one little thing.

Can you tell her that you are in contact with the Hofsrta Ed Dept, and they need paperwork handed in? (unless you REALLY DO have to/want to contact them to get this cleared up)....

When I student taught (Dowling calls it part time student teaching, instead of observation, because they WANT us to participate) I had a set schedule every week and followed it.

Sounds like she's not focused and taking advantage of the situation altogether.

How much longer is she in your classroom?

MAybe she feels she has the right to NOT do lessons because it IS "observation". I remember a girl was observing when I was doing my p/t. and she always said "I wish I could participate" Chat Icon and the teacher said she was welcome to if she wanted to.

So maybe she has the wrong perception, tninknig she caNT do lessons?

Definitely clear some things up. this is just becoming a nuisance it seems, as opposed to a rewarding experience for you. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: student observer VENT

It really stinks that you have be concerned about HER issues. It is very shocking that she would be so careless so early on in her training. If she is irresponsible now, what is going to happen when she is in charge of the education of 150 kids?

I know - someone like that will get one ASAP

the sad thing is that she is good with the kids and has a lot of portential but she is just not reliable enough.

Re: student observer VENT

when I went to observe I did just that, mostly observed. However I did interact with the kids and asked the teacher what the plans were, because I knew I was going to have to video tape my own lessons and wanted the kids to respect me & know me when I did.

Maybe she is not clear of what is expected and I would talk to her, but to not show is different and unprofessional!

I was working full time, observing, and working another part time job. And I was still was there when I was supposed to be.

Re: student observer VENT

She sounds realllly lazy. Not so much that she doesn't want to do teaching, more so that she's not showing up!!!!! She should at least show up and stay the full amount of time to show she's serious. Sounds like she's taking advantage. What kind of teacher is she going to be?!?!!! Chat Icon
