stupid question about gas prices
why in the world would a company (for argument's sake let's say Hess) be able to charge 3.89 in massapequa, for example, but 4.09 in huntington? don't they get their gas from the same place? unless there is something i am not thinking of, like rent costs or village taxes. anyone know?

Good question, I've often pondered the same question.

Individual stations can charge whatever they want for gas. There is no regulations regarding this. If two stations pay $3 a gallon for their gas as an example, one can charge us $3.01 if all they want is a penny profit. While the other can charge as much as they want.
i figured this - i guess part of my question is, do the stations in huntington automatically charge more because that is a traditionally higher-income area?

Re: stupid question about gas prices
town of huntington has a really old law that doesn't allow self serve, so they charge for it.
But its the same thing with everything else, look at grocery stores, each buy from different suppliers that charge differnt prices each week and its reflected in the price you pay. Its just not on the side of the road for all to see instead on the shelves of the store. its pretty much the standard with anything we buy if you think about it, cars, clothes, groceries, furniutre etc. your just not driving past the $ amount each day like gas

i was thinking this because where i work in East New York regular is 20 cents cheaper than by my house which is in Dyker Heights all in Brooklyn

this is what i was getting at. i didn't realize that huntington was all full serve so i guess that was a bad example... i was really referring to areas that i think most people associate with being higher-income... maybe garden city would be a better example, or the hamptons?

town of huntington has a really old law that doesn't allow self serve, so they charge for it. I don't necessarily agree with that. I find gas is cheaper by me (in Huntington) than where I work (in Hauppauge). With the exception of a few stations - namely Exxon, Mobil - their prices are outrageous across the board. But I don't pay more for gas just b/c my town doesn't allow self serve.

Re: stupid question about gas prices
I find that gas stations right off of major thoroughfares charge higher prices because some people get off the highway and have no choice but to buy their gas there. Also the higher rent areas are higher as well.
I go to a Sunoco on Stewart Ave that is always at least 5 cents cheaper than the others and it is full serve. They charge whatever they want.

When I lived in Huntington I'd pay the same price for full serve that I would pay for Self Serve elsewhere...although recently I have noticed that gas was more expensive in Huntington than by me in Nesconset...
