stupid question from a new mom (forgive me)

DD's umbilical cord is starting to lift and it is looking gooey and gross and raw underneath, is that normal?

Yes, leave it alone and just continue cleaning it until it dries up and falls off on its own. it's not bleeding right? just raw?

Sounds normal to me. Unless it starts bleeding or oozing, it should fall off and heal all by itself. Don't try to help it along though by trying to pull it off. My DD's had some wet blood behind it when it fell off and I called the ped. They said it was fine.

yes - i believe that means it's close to coming off. I went to my ped (my cousin works there and told me to come in) and he cortirized (sp) it - and it fell off the next day.

Dont worry DS did the same thing, then one day pop off it came. Totally normal! Life is so much better without that thing!

As long as it is not bleeding, does not have a bad odor and is not red outside of the cord area it is ok. I had the doctor look at DS's because it was pusy and oozing and this is what he told me.

No stupid questions! As long as there is not a red ring around the belly button and no pus it should be fine. My DD's took forever to fall off. It actually bled and it totally freaked me out but the dr said as long as there is no pus she is fine Chat Icon

Re: stupid question from a new mom (forgive me)

So not a stupid question. I was a mess with umbilical cord. A string from my dd onesie got stuck on it and started ripping it off.. kept bleeding, i was a mess calling any mother on my cell phone who would answer. Then it fell half off and had to have it cortrized.

Keep an eye on the site and make sure to clean it and keep it dry at all times and youll be fine. Im sure ill be a mess still with my 2nd baby with the umbilical cord. Chat Icon
