Subway in NYC
Has anyone taken the subway in NYC recently? Is it safe? I have to go soon for a dr. appt in the city and I'll be taking the train into Penn. I have to go to 53rd btw. Lex and 3rd. So I think I can take the E train there but I haven't been in the city for so long (I last worked there in 2008) I have no idea how it is now, just hearing the stories in the news.

Yes and you will be fine. There is a lot more police presence currently.

Subway in NYC
Millions of school kids take the Subway each day to school and come home unscathed. You will be fine.

Re: Subway in NYC
Yes it's fine but a lot more homeless people than there used to be. Plus you are going such a short distance all in midtown.

I stopped taking the train a few years ago. Too many mentally ill homeless. I have friends and colleagues who have been assaulted.

I always think that people have an irrational fear of the subway however it is definitely a little gross right now. I am not going to say unsafe but I just think the homeless population in the city is out of control and it's really apparent when you take the subway.
We were in midtown on a saturday over the summer, took the train from 57th to penn and there was a homeless guy who was clearly derranged in our car, laughing maniacally and he kept pulling his pants down. I'm sure he was harmless but I was very afraid he was just going to start peeing on people or worse.....

You'll be fine. I haven't taken it in a long time, but DS takes it almost daily, when he is no biking. Just be alert.

Subway in NYC
Dh stopped taking it 2 years ago and chose to just walk about 25-30 min everyday instead. His boss was almost thrown in front of a subway, but stepped away just in time and the man threw a different woman instead. It was very sad :( Unfortunately there are way too many mentally ill people around the city.

Subway in NYC
The thing is these things have been happening for years and years and years. This is not new. Homelessness in the trains is not new. People pushing people is not new. And it is not more now either. You just have more media posting about then back then.
Be a New Yorker and be aware of your surroundings and not trust anything or anyone.
Was just in the city with two 7 year olds and a 4 year old taking them for some fun. I was not scared one bit.

I completely disagree. I lived/worked in the city for years and when I first started (95ish) it was not great but then it was cleaned up for a while. Now it is back to where it was and maybe a little bit worse. I also remember a HUGE rat infestation in certain subways (particularly Rock Center) where they were all over the platforms, not just the tracks. Not sure how the rat issue is now. But as far as the homeless situation goes Gulianni definitely cleaned it up and that lasted probably until DeBlasio. People criticze Guilianni over this because apparently his treatment of the homeless population was borderline inhumane.

I agree 100%. Also what people don’t realize is this uptick in crime is being compared against historic lows.

I disagree. And this is from someone who uses mass transit her entire life because my mom didnt drive. Trains especially have always had rats, homeless people and random pushing on tracks. When i was a little kid i knew not to stand too close to the edge because my mom warned me of that. Nothing changed. Maybe controlled slightly better but not changed.

Re: Subway in NYC
I came here 20 years ago and used the subway without any issue. Since the pandemic I stopped, and not only because of homeless, but also mentally disturbed people doing things I never imagined. I don't know if my fear has been exaggerated because I have a teenage son; but I have heard cases in my "safe" neighborhood, when it never happened before. Btw, I live in the city and I don't have any apps telling me whats happening at every moment. I have only been here for 20 years, and this is not the city it was used to be 5 years, 10 years, 20 years ago. I even don't feel safe walking late by myself.

Re: Subway in NYC
People pushed on the tracks today...
Interesting that this happened today. People getting pushed is actually now at an all time high since they started tracking in the 90s.
I think this makes 9 people this year. Obviously with the millions of people that ride the subway daily your chances of dying by getting pushed onto the subway tracks is tiny, but I do think that it's indicative of the current environment in the subways....

It doesnt say that they were pushed onto the tracks but, there has been a rise in pedestrian/subway incidents in the past year. A lot of homeless people walk in the subway tunnels (as to your other point that homelessness has increased back to the pre-Giuliani days which I agree with).
Someone was struck by a subway yesterday too.

On the news they said the investigation was ongoing but that it was most likely that they were both pushed.

Aah - I had just read the articles.
Someone else was hit by a train last night as well. So 4 in two days.

I imagine there’s more to the story. It seems unlikely that someone PURPOSELY pushed 2 random strangers onto the tracks because they felt like it.
When I used to take the LIRR I remember trains being canceled because someone died on the tracks. Happened several times in the year I took the LIRR. I don’t think anyone knew about it except the people who were late for work because their train was canceled.

Also, don’t stand close to the edge of the platform. This isn’t rocket science. If you’re that afraid of falling on the tracks wait in the middle of the platform until the train stops. It’s not that hard.
