Suffolk issues swimming advisory at 66 beaches
BY SOPHIA CHANG | [email protected] 2:44 PM EDT, August 6, 2008
Suffolk County issued an advisory Wednesday against swimming at 66 beaches because of heavy rainfall, according to the Department of Health Services.
The beaches include those located along the northern shoreline of Great South Bay, within and nearby various North Shore embayments such as Cold Spring Harbor, Huntington Harbor and Bay, Centerport Harbor, Northport Harbor and Bay, Port Jefferson Harbor, Stony Brook Harbor, and Mount Sinai Harbor.
In addition, said commissioner Humayun Chaudhry, bathers are advised against swimming at Long Island Sound beaches that are directly impacted by nearby storm water discharges.
The heavy rainfall could have caused bacterial numbers at the beaches in excess of state standards, Chaudhry said.
Beaches located on the Atlantic Ocean, the Peconic Estuary, and most beaches on Long Island Sound are not affected by this advisory, which will be rescinded as of 9 a.m. Thursday if samples show bacteria levels are not elevated, officials said.
Chaudhry also said that Minasseroke Beach in Strongs Neck and Tanner Park Beach in Copiague will remain closed to bathing as a result of recent samples that show elevated bacteria levels.
