Suffolk residents - Steve Levy and Immigration
Do you believe that his stance on immigration fuels hate-crimes and hatred in general in Suffolk?
Link to Newsday article
Personally - I DO believe that he is fueling the anti-hispanic hatred and not doing a thing about it. I think he really doesn't care what happens to these people.
Now with his anti-SCPD, anti-immigration stances, I think he's digging himself a very deep hole. He's creating too much tension. Way too much tension.
What are your thoughts?

Re: Suffolk residents - Steve Levy and Immigration
I don't necessarily think his policies instigate hate crimes - Suffolk County does have a problem with illegal housing and illegal/migrant workers issues with some companies.
However, in stating the above, we have a long way to go before racism can be erased from the minds/thoughts of individuals and this type of negative attitide is what causes hate crimes to occur. Tolerance needs to be TAUGHT and PRACTICED and then we can start to move forward!

Re: Suffolk residents - Steve Levy and Immigration
I don't think this particular incident is a result of Levy's stance on illegal immigration - I have the feeling these particular young men who committed this crime don't even know who Levy is or what he says. To blame his stance for other people's actions is unfair. In addition, he must believe his statements and policy are what a large portion of his constituents believe or else I am sure he would not say it.

Re: Suffolk residents - Steve Levy and Immigration
Levy isnt anti-immigration. he's anti-ILLEGAL-immigration. his stance is simple. the people who are here illegally are breaking the law of this country and government needs to do something about it. since the federal government cant or wont do something about, he's tried to take action to remedy the situation. and he's right to do so. his job is to uphold the law. he may be rough around the edges and be very vocal about the situation but, he is right on target to try to remedy the situation. whether he succeeds or not remains to be seen, but at least he's not turning a blind eye and a deaf ear.

I completely agree with you and I think that because he's so rough around the edges - it doesn't help in the slightest.
I still DO think that he fuels at least some of the hatred. The fact that he did refer to this as a one-day story shows how he feels at least somewhat. Kind of like - there are bigger fish to fry, one dead hispanic guy isn't that newsworthy.
He may not turn a blind eye to the illegal immigration population but he tries to turn a blind eye to crimes against them.

Re: Suffolk residents - Steve Levy and Immigration
I don't think his policies or opinions influenced this crime. A crime like this is fueled by pure ignorance, hatred and intolerance. Again, I can't help but wonder what these kids hear at home.
I don't agree with most things Mr. Levy does and do believe some of his plans have seriously damaged his relationships with certain communities. Case in point, his plan a while back to have the SCPD deputized to act as immigration agents. This would have been a disaster and placed many, many people in danger because if they were the victim of a crime, they would hesitate to call 911 for fear of being deported. Regardless of status here in the US, ALL residing here have a right to be safe.
I do believe that more needs to be done regarding bias crimes.

completely agree and illegal immigration is something that affects all of us- it means that there are not enough resources for citizens and those that choose to come here through legal means. I dont begrudge anyone the american dream, and my family immigrated here, but I just think they should do it the legal way. jmo

ITA!!! I would love to ask him this question: So just bc someone is not here legally, does that mean that their lives are not as valuable as the life of a citizen? A human life is a human life. Granted people already have their feelings on illegal immigrants and whether I agree with them or not I respect those feelings. I think when someone in the position of Levy voices his feelings it definitely helps to add more fuel to the fire.

Re: Suffolk residents - Steve Levy and Immigration
somehow i doubt that those 7 animals were thinking of steve levy when they killed a man. no politician has ever swayed me into feeling a certain way. it's a copout to blame a public official. if anything, place blame on parents because they are the ones who raised them. but all in all, it is the FAULT of the ANIMALS (i can't even call them people) who perpetrated the crime...no one else!
i hate how the media portrays everyone else as the bad person when it is the fault of those 7 kids.
they probably don't even know steve levy's name, let alone how he feels about things.

ITA. If you don't think he's handling it correctly, work for his opponent if he runs again in 2011.

That was NOT AT ALL the point of my thread. I was asking other people's thoughts.
What kind of a statement is that? Go work for his opponent if he runs? Seriously? Maybe I'll take out a radio ad too.

I agree with you, these boys could not tell you who Steve Levy is. I hate how the media portrays almost everything. A colleague of mine is representing one of the boys, so I don't plan to post much commentary. I understand him taking the case because I believe so strongly in the right to effective counsel. I hope that this case does not tear apart a community. It's a tragedy whenever someone loses their life too soon.

No
I didn't know what his stance was until I read the article, and I'm sure that most people don't know either. what difference would that make? people hate because they're ignorant. and they inflict harm or murder b/c they're criminals. not because of a local politicians views.
