Suggestions for a 4 year who bites?

My 4 y.o. DD has sensory processing delays along with gross motor delays. She is very sweet, really smart, amazing language skills and very social. When she gets really happy or excited she bites. She has bitten me, her baby brother and my niece who is 18 months younger than her. She loves my niece and spends a ton of time with her so unfortunately she tends to get bitten the most. My sister is a pediatric SLP and I am a pediatric OT. We have done everything we can think of to address the issues, but this behavior continues. The kids are very well disciplined and generally well behaved. I have consulted with an amazing social worker and a psychologist that I work with for ideas. I have the girls on a behavioral plan (DRO), I' m using the Alert Program/How does your Engine Run, a sensory diet and the Wilbarger Deep Pressure Protocal. I also bought a ton of social skills books that we read together. In September she will start PreSchool and I'm so worried that she will bite kids at school. I'm home with her all summer so I want to do as much as I can now. I also enrolled her in a sensory motor group with her PT that she sees during the school year and an OT. She doesn't qualify for OT under CPSE and I can't afford to payout of pocket. She bites infrequently, but when she does it's a big deal. Today she bit my niece again while I was watching the kids and my BIL is really upset. I left them alone for a few minutes in the play room to make them lunch. It tends to happen every few months or so....

DS is a little older and I have the opposite issue....he does this when he's really angry but primarily to adults.

He's fortunately gotten to the point where we can take something away from him as punishment.

We also have noticed that he only does this when he is beyond exhausted and can't calm down.

It's really tough to deal with and I've had embarrassing bruises because of it.

Have you tried the "chewy" for her as a replacement. Maybe conditioning her to bite the chewy instead of a person would work. Also when I worked in the EI program a child with biting if they were to bite and we caught it we would put their own hand in front of them so they bite themselves and learn it hurts. Since its not a daily behavior I'm not sure if you could show her/ teach her but they are options! Best of luck! :)

I tried the chewy necklace but she's not too interested. It's so hard. I guess I'll focus more on her sensory diet and see how her sensory motor group goes at the clini. She went today and was able to use the swing and ball pit along wih an sensory motor obstacle course.

Can you create a social story for her that goes through how she feels before she wants to bite and what she can do instead of biting?

That's a great idea. I totally forgot about social stories! I will start taking pics tomorrow.

Social stories are great for this. Also if your child is more visual, look into video modeling. There are video social stories out there for almost everything. Also, see if the shows your DC is interested in has any episodes on biting. When DD was younger she was into Yo Gabba Gabba and she loved the "don't bite your friends" episode. She still sings the song to this day lol.
